So Grumpy thread time, I have held a CPCS Card since 16 when I did my tickets and a NVQ 2 At Duchy College.
Now in 15 years, I've seen the scheme do it's thing, introduce new hurdles (Catagory specific touchscreen, additional catagories, Get sold to NOCN so you had to visit two random places to renew)

However renewal now would appear to be a internet training package that is designed for people who shove crayons up there nose? I can't be asked with it so they will be lapsing in december.
Feel free to add opinions.

All the renewal bullshit is ridiculous . Make it harder to get it in the first place but then you have it for life , like an HGV . It’s a money making racket and always has been . I’ve had mine since introduced with grandfathers rights so have begrudgingly kept going with it but through gritted teeth . I think I’m geting to the point where I’m not going to bother anymore . More recently the jobs I’ve needed for ( not your one ! @Mogman ) have been nothing but a pain in the arse anyway .

A quango money making scam.
I'm fine with training but like you said renewal after 5 years feck off.
Asbestos awareness every year feck off.
Take into account the lost revenue, cost of training paying wages.
Training is good, but make it fit for purpose and not about money

Boils my piss but training is important, but still find it frustrating.

Every 3 years ….
Fire safety training
Asbestos awareness
Abrasives
First aid
Mental health awareness
Forklift CB
Forklift reach
Hiab
Digger
Dumper

Every 5 years.
ACS Core gas
ACS LPG crossover
ACS Gas Caravan ticket
ACS Gas Park home ticket
ACS Gas Boilers
ACS Gas Water heaters
ACS Gas House fires
ACS Gas Caravan fires
ACS A few other gas ticket I forget
ACS G3/Hot water cylinders
ACS Water regs

Oil ticket
Oil tanks ticket
Oil Pressure jet boiler ticket
Oil vapourising ticket
Scaffolding platforms
Part L Building Regs ticket
Low temp heating systems
Heat pump ticket

The list goes on.
Each of these is upto a day away from earning a living , and there is also all the CPD and product training required that’s not in the above lists.
Frustratingly most of these are box ticking exercises / reassessments and teach you very little , most of the compliance could be dealt with by a well structured online annual training and refresher course which would save a f**k ton of time rather than driving 30 miles to a training centre and having to proceed at the pace of the slowest (which is usually the assessor!)

Yes every day I can get in my van and drive like a twat (if I choose to) and I haven’t been required to carry out any driver training or updates on Highway Code knowledge since 1997.

Crazy world.

I had my first card 25 years ago.no one ever asked for it but it got renewed after I think 5 years.cost a packet again and never got asked to look at it.when that expired I was hasselled by powers that be to renew again but I never bothered despite being told I could not work anywhere without it.ive not had a card now for 15 years and even though I don't do no where near as much as I once did I still never needed it.ive worked as a subcontractor for amongst others,Anglian water, persimmon, kier eastern, norfolk and Suffolk council,British Gas,ayton and many others.ive been in the game for 40 years and have learnt a bit but pretty much had enough of it all.still do a bit but woukd rather be at home farming and that ain't great either.its just a money making scheme for the administrators

I agree with all of your views on the card schemes, but having actually renewed mine earlier this year, it honestly couldn't be any easier. The only thing I struggled with was having a camera connected to my computer to prove I wasn't cheating. If you have a laptop with inbuilt camera its easy. I managed to connect my gopro as a webcam to get around it....
Yes this new simple renewal process makes even more mockery out of the scheme
But it is easy to do

It might be easy to do, but it's also a tremendous waste of time. I've not got the attention span or interest to work through there CPD modules.

Sick of people justifying it because NOCN have suddenly shat the bed and concluded that perhaps they should do something to improve it.

Did the original cat thing back on the nineties( at a cost of about £2000 ),renewed it once ,then it all changed and I was told I would have to do it all again so I never bothered.
I have independent tickets to show competence, a half day “test” for reasonable fee, never been asked to show even that .

You don't need any concentration. You also dont need a braincell. Honestly, I think I could get a child to complete it. Actually - they did recently with the youngest ever driver

You can skip the videos and just answer the questions. Takes minutes honestly. Its laughable how easy it is.

So what’s the point in it all?
To tick the box to allow you to work on some jobs. Also helps prove training in the event that you ever need to claim on your insurance or defend yourself in court. Not ideal but its the only scheme we have that seems to be accepted by all parties.

I'll pay you to do mine for me 🤣

It doesn't let you skip the videos anymore I'm afraid.

My defence in court is 20+ years experience and countless witness statements. A Kelloggs cutout card doesn’t count for s**t I’m afraid! Even if I did get 100% in the last few touchscreen tests.

that answer right there just shows how pointless it all is. glad i am past all that bollocks now, it has always been a money making scheme to me. the card proves fk all except you have handed over coin to get it. some of the best drivers i have seen and worked with never had a ticket but all the bad ones did and thought they were s**t hot with it.

Pure nonsense, renewed mine last sunday in less than an hour, 28 quid or whatever it was, feel cheated in so much as it cost me 1200 quid to get in the first place and now any lunatic can go online and renew it, my 12 year old could have done it.

It should be site based, properly tested, not online, didnt even need to give logbook evidence and my card turned up in the post yesterday

Did yours force you to watch all there s**t videos before you could move on? To be honest that's my biggest issue.

Whilst it is a money making scheme in some ways in others it provides a quick and easy way for large sites to mitigate liability ( not risk , just liability)
Health and safety law says everyone must be trained and competent. The ticket is a quick way to prove minimum levels.
If you tell someone to get in a machine and can't prove competency then any accident is the person who gave the instructions fault. If they have a ticket then the accident is the operators fault. Very simplified version but essentially what it burns down to.
In terms of anyone on here, the tickets for machines are barely the tip of the iceberg.
There is no way any small company without full time office staff (multiple) can be anywhere near compliant. The amount of paperwork, that a lot on here won't even realise exists, is mind boggling. And that's just compulsory stuff. Start looking at accreditations like ISO, BSI and rail or infrastructure specific. And the paperwork is beyond ridiculous.
The way big companies can spunk money up the wall has to be seen to be believed. We all know it's bad but until you sit in one of their offices you can't even begin to understand the waste.
