Just travelling anywhere is now depressing....

School run...fuk me that's painful in those times, might aswell sit at home an extra hour
I deliberately time my journey in and out of Bristol to avoid rush hour. 10am start works best and you may as well do that because you finish at 6-6.30 which means you miss the traffic going out of Bristol anyway!

slide vice, cuts 45 each way on the swing, 220mil cap., quick lock vice and roller guides - ain't dear either - just a fair trek

my heart missed a beat when the pic came up on FBMP -- then realised it was only a 250...:cry: -- they did a 400 too but both were only 4 valve

I have been looking for one of these for years XS500E DOHC 8 valve --- were years ahead of their time and rode like they were on rails -- had one in '79/80 - and absolutely loved it -- of all the bikes I've owned I'd say it was my favourite bike
if anyone ever trips over one of these please let me know

Plymouth tribe up over the weekend ... Pam not up to coping with Josh, missus and 4 kids for the whole weekend, so they stayed with Vicki in town and we got them in small doses :giggle:
three birthdays in September .. Harpers on the 11th and two of Josh's boys later in the month (can't recall exactly when), but Pam did them all a cake - again
WP_20250919_14_39_24_Pro.jpg

wasn't a lot left by the end of yesterday afternoon, when they departed and peace returned to Chez Druid.
Bit of a 'pottery' day today, recovering and Pam decided she wanted to strim the edges of the lawn after lunch .. got herself togged and harnessed .. gave the Husqy a yank or six - she's not quite got the knack of a cold start, despite being shown many times -- having listened to the efforts I had to go and give it the required 'yank' for a first time start on choke .... gave it some and it just went click, click, click - bugger !!
Summat not right in the pull cord dept.
So .. bench time for the Husqy .. got it all apart and seemed to be fine - suspected the engagement pawls - got that assembly off and gave it a good clean with some carb cleaner - moved a lot free-er - little bitch to remove - all back together to try - nah!! :(
back apart and pulling at the cord all moving fine, so took a hold of the drive plate and it weren't going round under load  so pulled that apart and it's got an anti snatch set up in there with a double wound spring - very clever - #cept the one drive leg'd given up the struggle :(

so ....... into the vice, little blow torch out and warm up the busted end of yon spring - hey presto temp. repair, 'til LS can get/send me a new one :giggle:

re-assemble and test drive(y)

edges of lawn massacred and everything else around it i can't get at with the mower .. whilst Pam sorted tea .... fair pile of green tish to pick up tomorrow ....... now let's get a spring ordered

well Adam at L&S deserves top marks for being on the ball - back to me in 10 minutes this morning asking for serial no.s, pix, etc .. their spares pages does not list this spring - so having asked the Q.s with pix to explain what I was after, he went off in search ..... came back to me about half four saying he has 'a spring' of similar dimensions - but didn't see it 'til this evening so'll have to get more details tomorrow -- I'm hopeful though :giggle::cool:(y)

Pam's been on a weeding mission this morning - along the side of the drive outside the house - have said before - we have a small spring appears in one spot when the weather is dry - goes/disappears all through winter/spring .. but it does cause a mess and a lot of unwanted 'flora' and algae growth - so having weeded it all, she then wanted to blast it off with the pressure washer -- now that's never 'just' a 'Pam' job as she always has to involve me and I inevitably end up dong most of it :( - including the tidy up and put it all away ---- I had other plans - which eventually had to wait

however - I did get to 'em after lunch :giggle: .. have had a re-think on my fixing method for the Tee / hold down stud so - got the tee back in the Ajax and altered that .... again
WP_20250923_14_38_27_Pro.jpg

and a counter-bore for a weld pit
WP_20250923_14_52_10_Pro.jpg

gonna weld the stud into it - so this had to go ...
WP_20250923_14_58_47_Pro.jpg

and then chamfered off the end to get a nice 'weld pit' to secure them to each other ..
WP_20250923_16_15_02_Pro.jpg

then turned my attention back to the 'nut' and got that threaded
WP_20250923_15_33_49_Pro.jpg

yep - nice smooth running thread
WP_20250923_15_42_07_Pro.jpg
then swapped 'em round to suss I'd got the 'depth' calc.s right
WP_20250923_16_08_04_Pro.jpg
there's a thrust bearing hiding in there :giggle:
WP_20250923_16_08_12_Pro.jpg

and check - again .. for the right length .. measure/check twice, etc. saves a lorra tears and **** ups :ROFLMAO:
WP_20250923_16_15_12_Pro.jpg

next i needed a centring washer/bush for that thrust
WP_20250923_16_27_00_Pro.jpg

one washer/bush ..

and the 'nut' on top

and I'm out of pix again

the reason the nut is as tall as it is -- gotta clear all the adjusters on the tool holders
WP_20250923_17_21_37_Pro.jpg

and having sussed it all works according to plan ...... time to shape the top of the nut, ready for a handle
WP_20250923_18_51_03_Pro.jpg

swarf, swarf, everywhere ... took some clearing up earlier after tea - that's just the last couple of passes - bucket's filling!! ...........................and the posty's been again :giggle:
WP_20250923_18_51_16_Pro.jpg
WP_20250923_18_50_09_Pro.jpg

bit late after a late tea to run the genny up again, so a finish cut in the morning - then it gets 'a turn' in the Ajax to set up a handle position -- after I've welded the tee nut on to the pull down bolt/pin to get a 'finish' position where I want/need it to be (y)

well I'll be damned -- sadly it's an early one - circa '73/'74 at a guess - I want an E model - '78/'79 as above -- clean though
1758741633143.png

always fancied one of these too - never owned one but a mate had an early XS2 (which had cam lube issues apparently) cured on the later ones re-launched as the XS650 - Japanese Triumph - don't see many of 'em about
1758742101684.png

Kawi also did a lovely 750 twin, mid '70s and they're even rarer .. another mate had one - came to France with me in '84 on it - damned thing used to overheat in slow traffic - another Jap Triumph :giggle: --- wouldn't turn my nose up at one - like hen's teeth now I'd suspect.
