Would think anything other than a grapple would be a pain in the arse for rock armour especially if sat on the beach side of it.

Nearly fed up with this job. Massively underestimated the work. Allowed 72 hours and we are at nearly 89 hours so far and another day making good left. Services everywhere and most of the ground is like a quarry. Never seen so much stone. Doubled the pipe bedding Just the last bit (in photo) to tidy up tomorrow and will need to riddle the stone out so we can dump spoil in the customers paddock low spots. Sun burnt every day and tea and cakes from customer at 12pm and 4pm every day. If I had priced it correctly then it would be a great job. Fortunately its an estimate not a quote - and customer is likely to be fine, but I hate having that conversation.
Had a local guy in with 3 tonner this morning to rip out the stuff that he could get to. He is £36 per hour including fuel AND machine which really shocked me. He runs a small team with several machines so must be making enough to survive.. but still....

it happens - and if the customer is decent and you've not 'slacked', they'll usually be understanding - not got X-ray vision for what's in the ground

My optimistic outlook ruined price work for me. Happy to charge a fair rate and plod along. I might not set land speed records but clients happy with the tidy results.

Will be shaped for playing with pipe, holed to let water out. It's not really digging just tending to the pipe so the dozer can spread the material.interesting bucket on the big CAT

On a price I always had a ‘hard ground/rock’ clause that would introduce a day rate for anything unforeseen. You never know what you’ll come across!

In reality subbing him in for half a day to dig the trench would have been beneficial to you and customer rather than struggling with e10 he’d have had it done with the 3 ton.

It’s rare for customers to allow hourly etc, most want a fixed price quote. Nice to be able to plod than gamble

Yes that’s what we did , the trenching we did with E10 was where anything bigger wouldn’t fit :-(
