Two very different days of work - picture above is some pole planting I did earlier in the week for a new treehouse-style play structure (this is going to be a small part of it!). The Rototilt and grab made the job easy (and in reality made the job possible in some parts that I’m not allowed to show photos of as the poles had to be threaded between existing structures, other poles and trees without damaging anything).

Today has been all about massive machines and shitloads of diesel!!!

The chipper is one of 6 in the UK and costs £750 grand... It was filling an ADT in 4 1/2 mins! What took us a week to cut was gone in a day - absolutely amazing machine!

Certainly an impressive machine, however, the lads I use for taking my cut trees away, will tarmac my drive and give me some lucky heather😀😂

But will they pay you for the privilege?!...

It is all madness though - that machine is kept busy chipping for biomass all over the country, which is an industry entirely propped up by government RHI handouts. The chip produced will be dried and sold to people who burn it in boilers to provide heat for their houses/businesses, but the users predominantly only do that instead of using gas etc as they are paid to run those boilers (and the payments are so good that they make decent income from it).
The ‘buying woodchip/drying woodchip/selling woodchip’ is run as a business in its own right, but the real money from that aspect of the job comes from the RHI payments generated by the woodchip boiler that is used to dry the chip in the first place... As long as the boilers are running money is being earned - it’s not particularly green if you have a look at the big picture (but it has made and continues to make some serious money for those involved).

RHI is a complete clusterfuck. Let’s not forget that that’s why the Northern Ireland government collapsed!

Bet that chipper had a 50% grant too...🤬

He reckons a 20% grant was available but wasn’t worth the 5 year paper-trail required following purchase (records of every twig etc that go through it).
20% of £750000 is a lot of money though, and he has 2 of these machines....

Apparently taxed as a chipper - can be driven at 16 years old (weighs 36 tonnes...)

so special vehicle, running red (almost certainly) and therefore not allowed to tow anything that runs on duty paid fuel like car, van, truck, etc..
I used to occasionally chuck an XT 600 Yam on the back/deck of a crane to get home with, if leaving on site for a few days ..... totally illegal and'd have had serious s**t if stopped for it

I doubt if the chipper is entitled to tow anything, other than an empty trailer, much like a duck

Stump pulling and cleaning excess stone and soil off. At £100/tonne tip fee for roots versus £25 for stone/soil it's worth it. Looks like the CE plate has got knocked off the hook....... it's definitely not a McConnell shakaerator tine rescued from a friendly farmers scrap bin
