I have actually been thinking of formalising my building work skills by doing a plumbing course at the local college. I did a level 3 electrical installations to 17th edition a few years ago. I think for me it might make more sense than working for a local ground work company for £12-£13.50 a hour for the rest of my days. Any advice on the plumbing? Do you need to complete a nvq to do gass?

My NVQ level 3 was 4 years of night school. Not sure what the worth is in fast track college courses. Night school not on option these days though. ACS (gas) usually part of level 3 plus a lot of evidenced work (portfolio) in the gas industry before you can sit for the tickets. Quite hard to get into unless you have an apprenticeship. Level 3 can mean NVQ or just a diploma which means nothing. Careful what you pay for. Better paid and easier work on the books than groundworks though IMHO... but you'll need to put in a few years of your own time and money to get the tickets and experience.

Did my level 3 nvq as a day release apprentice. I was fortunate I got paid to go as quite a few of the other lads didn’t get paid for the day when at college! For gas they were on about changing it so you had to have relevant industry experience but I’m sure the assessment centres find ways round it. My last refresher was done in 2 days. Sadly it was pretty much a box ticking exercise that just lightened my bank account rather than an opportunity to learn anything new. They still go into detail about boilers that people stopped fitting 20 years ago

They would love to pile in saying how it should have been done without noticing that it was well planned and executed.

Obviously should have been down earlier but it was safely "assisted felled" away from targets and using what available sound hinge that there was while keeping the chainsaw driver in a safe position for a rapid exit

Yep thanks for noticing all the relevant stuff of getting the job done and pleased with the hinge cuts on both trunks
And yes the neighbours had been commenting about the branches and foliage over their garden
They moved in a year ago. And have already taken out all their big trees. And now they have no leafy shade

Continuing stripping off 1200m2 of self binding gravel and edgers, loosing it as surface in old walled garden. U55 is a thing of hate, smaller less comfy cab than the old 71-3 and the u55 has short dipper grading bucket finishes pull in about 6 foot from machine.

Sitting in u55 for few hours has us both hobbling have to hold legs together to use levers as seat does go low enough to clear my thighs lol

Dx10 comfier place to spend day

Other faffy pits did breaks on amarok didbt know about wind in rear callipers lucky dad had air powered tool for them under bench or I’d been stuck lol

Ordered grading beam for 1.2/1.6/3 ton to share from Bmc be interesting

Timber showed up for edging class 4 preservative 10 of them I could push finger through! Timber merchant very apologetic and yard lads getting ear bashing he said being swapped

Brew cabin came out of store and had to replace all fuel lines on generator think mouse been busy

Screener bucket is off to new pastures after a chance instagram post I saw today, 3 ton had new lift pump at 4.5k hours not bad for little old pump.sometimes spend more time fixing stuff than operating it, life of a small Groundworks firm you have to wear so many hats lol

You can get plastic or core 10 /Corten steel edgings or slip form a concrete one or could old pin kerbs

UC4 is a con. They say 'oh, 15 year guarantee sir'. Well that only covers supply, and is feck all use when the timber is now part of a fence or driveway.

Creosote, steel, concrete or plastic.

Been saying for years how hateful the u55 is, digs well yes but it’s made for the jap market, ie ‘small’ people!

But why overrun it as you won't get a tidy edg to the 6mm or the tar or are you putting a temp edging in to work up to ??
Wooden edgings are fine for foot traffic as it doesn't matter if they rot out once the compaction is done. Only really a problem with vehicle traffic.

Yeah we will have to fit a temp edge but done enough moaning about it that pm has just said on email we can have edge seen

So 'gave' a nice big pond job to my Brother-in-law a few weeks ago. It was on some land owned by a bee keeper friend nearby.
"You might wanna wait until it drys out a bit. The ground is water logged"...........

Came out sweet as. Just as well using hired in gear

Mind you the pond is coming along nicely. They had to clear loads of brash first.....

Water table is only about 6" below at the moment. And filled up overnight.

Got a feeling I'll be back again soon to help out........
