When you know you've 1 cog left and if you fluff it up. You going back down to try again.
Or some twat pulls out spoiling your run up.
Never a good feeling
Looking for a site in Bargoed, early 80,s .. stopped to ask a milkman for directions - it's 5.45 and I'm in a TMS300 Grove .. like this, but with two chain boxes with about 2.5t of chains in and 10 half sleepers on the deck -- circa 33t...
"take the second left and just keep going - it pops out opposite the site - I'm up and down it all the time " rounded a couple of corners and I am confronted by the mother of all hills ...

13 cog Fuller Road ranger - lovely box but 3 ranges and 'heavy' .. I've run out of anything usable in high, as wasn't going overly quick to start with and I am rapidly running out of the five in low ...
going from low to crawler was an art - which I managed to pull off to perfection that morning ..
I was now in 3rd crawler and the 240 Cummins was groaning ... 3 to 2 was a long travel, but doubling down makes all the difference to making it and I still could see no end in sight to this fkn hill ...

eventually had to double it down into bottom crawler, pedal to the metal and prey ... (even with the weight of the machine 1st crawler was an awesomely powerful gear - once pulled a fully laden artic out of a stream with 1st crawler, like it wasn't there), but that's another story

this
'road' came out onto a main-ish drag and there was no way I was gonna make a pull away ... anything coming was gonna see 5-6ft of jib and hook block appear, slowly, fore me an' the cab started to fill the road, followed by two axles wearing 13.00-20 wheels... and I was gonna want ALL the available road

crested that junction with about 400 revs to spare and most of the seat foam up my bum, to a thankfully empty road .. and damn me there was the site

...... never, ever, EVER ask a milkman for bloody directions
