I assume you're all referring to a 5 lung diesel lump? ...
~... a five pot motor is the smoothest configuration you can get (aside from a V10 of course) :rolleyes::giggle:
Interesting write-up on 5's here.
It makes a couple of interesting points - the firing order means the gas flow through a single carb doesn't work, so you either build a 5-throat carb or wait until fuel injection becomes practical (the first 5's were diesel).

when was this Frank? .... no pissing about ... mobilise the 360s and cut some channels .... be still thinking about here a month later

In the eighties Cat marketed the 206 and 212 ducks, which were badged Eders. Outfit I was with had one of each. The 206 had a 4 cylinder Deutz, the 212 had a 5 cylinder. Night and day regarding smoothness.
