Check it has the right starter fitted! There is a cheap version or there is the correct one, guessing it has a Kubota 1505 engine, pictures of the engine if you like👍
Mick, I think it’s has a D1105 engine.

When I got my 463 it had been standing for many years. It turned over ok but just would not start. In the end I had to blow a hot air gun down the intake to get it to go.

Once started I ran it for about 15 mins. Been fine ever since.

Yes you are right, D1105, the larger skid steer had the 1505 in it!🤭

better than a hot air gun is a blow lamp .... HOT air in the intake works miracles on all but the most ferked diesel ... 's why many use the 'flame thrower' cold start burners :giggle::giggle:

Or the mini manifold heater(toaster type)

If I had no attachments for my machine I think forks would now be my first choice.

I didn’t realise how much I would use them until I had them. I acquired some forks from a small forklift and made a plate that fitted the Bobcat quick attach to carry them.

Can’t remember when was the last time I even put the bucket on mine.

My machine is the 463 so slightly smaller than yours but I can take some photos and measurements of the bucket if it helps. This would give you the proportions and then scale the measurements to match your machine.
We bought forks for the avant unbelievable how much we use them

Druid,

I did think about the blow lamp but was not sure what effect the flame consuming the oxygen from the air would have so decided on the paint stripping gun.

In the case of this machine I’d be more worried about the interlock system paralysing the machine making it immovable than I would about the engine starting. If it’s got fuel and bit of compression it’ll go with some heat.

Another point of note is that if it’s the same as the 463 there are a couple of bolts you can take out of the transmission and then replace with bolts with the end turned to a smaller diameter which release the parking brake and allows the machine to be towed. Details are in the service manual which I’ve seen a copy of on the web for this machine for free.

I will check tomorrow which engine needs a fan belt I think it's a 950 x 10 cut som connectors off today found the main feed to the key and the start wires were crimped together🤔 also found the solonoid wire although it's a 3 wire solenoid so it may be the pull one not the hold one removed all the random bits of wiring so now it's a question of tracing the wires back I will try and get on with it tomorrow I will also go armed with a heat gun and some easy start

would not recommend using in conjunction AT ALL !!!!!
ether should be the very last resort

know where you're coming from Rob, but it's always worked for me ... my 4t Hyster could be an utter bitch in the very cold weather on a Monday morning, after two days getting down to ambient.... was way kinder to it than winding it, even with the cold start flame thrower, a bit of help from the gas axe and it'd go off just great ... flame thrower was more than adequate usually, most of the time and's the std. install on those 4 pot Perkies

By all means use hot air, particularly if the heater plugs are anything less than pristine. I give mine a good 20 sec or more on the heater plugs.

I’d not use Easy start as I’ve heard many times it’s not recommended with these particular Kubota engines. It’s not good for engines at the best of times but apparently is a real no no on these engines.

Ether is fine if used in small doses as intended. The original use of it was generally in specific shot amounts calibrated for the engine size.

Unfortunately in can form it gets used liberally without hesitation and causes knocking..... In small engines (and even large ones) the over compression leads to the con rods being hammered shorter.

I agree ether is a last resort but I have some just in case it's not run in about 2 years apparently if I can sort the wiring that's half the battle

Cummins in the late '70,s/early '80,s came with ether start ... cannister in/close to the engine bay with either a cable pull for 'a shot' or solenoid op. from the ign. key for a measured dose on cold mornings .. V504/V555/240/260/280 all had it

Yup those four cylinder Kubota engines just will not start without heat if the ambient temperature is less than 30 degrees! Both my forklift and multione are the same. The forklift is a nightmare as for some reason if you forget the first time, the flow plug relay needs the ignition off for a minute to reset so you can’t just go again straight away!

For a lesser knock use an electrical cleaner spray! It likes CI engines
