It makes sense to me that someone who is obsessed with their sport enough to own a very lightweight long thing could be trusted with it on the road.
It also makes sense to me that if you're running a hugely heavy multiaxle crane carrier then it's accoutrements can be similarly huge & heavy.

So one last question.......... why can't a road going duck tow on a trailer items that are not goods but necessary for its use ? 🤔🤣

it's a fine Q Navvy ...
and one that only HMRC / DVSA / ETC., can answer ...
you can't tow a trailer with a crane either, but can carry equipment related to the crane on its bed AND NOTHING ELSE

as for tax ...
if you mean VED they're both 'taxable' on the road as a special vehicle/plant ..
same thing with a BHL ...
can carry buckets and fuel, but can't tow anything ...
a dumper can tow a road compressor (for instance - it's plant), but not a trailer ... neither can it carry anything in its skip .. it's plant not a goods vehicle.

before red went, it was illegal for a red fuelled vehicle to tow a vehicle which used a fuel which carried road duty

personally, I think 'the ministry' were always concerned that "give 'em an inch and they'd take a mile" (and the piss) ... they'd be hauling all sorts, so the easiest solution is a blanket ban - end of
JCB were flogging their Hydrapig as a road going ' trailer tow-er' .. 'til they were pulled up on it and they were supposed to be lobbying the MOT on the subject ... quietly died a death (much like the CEF)

One of the containers is just it’s battery pack!!
If climate change is real, there will need to be several different solutions for the variety of working conditions that work trucks operate in. Nothing wrong with electric in fixed locations where charging is available outside of working hours. Trunking between different locations is a possibility. But there does need to be joined up thinking and sensible investment. Those two requirements are very rare in transport!!

some major investment needed on the road itself as well. Not just a few charging stations.

90-ish % of the UK roads're bolloed already ..... only decent surfaces 'round here are the new bits -- wonder if the spec for their building called for upgrading to be capable of sustained EV use? .... knowing the cheapest tender philosophy employed in their construction, I very much doubt it

on the subject of roads ....😭😤😤
Aber. yesterday  ....
dropped Pam at Morrisons and went on to Aldi to do the bulk ...
usual story in there .. 3 out of 7 tills open - took me longer to queue and pay for 212 quids-worth than it did to fill the trolley
loaded it into the boot and tried to depart ...
10 minutes to get out .. (there will be an unholy row if i get a ticket for yesterday) .. and a further 45 min.s to do the reverse trip to Morrisons ...
half a mile max. Pam'd called me just as I was about to leave ... 50 mins later was a "WTF are you? " call ...
" 'bout 100 yds away - in a queue from hell !! "

there are temp lights on the corner by 'the angel hotel' on the map ... a bad bottle neck anyway ... with not a soul in sight, supposedly patching about 4 sq feet of surface. Been there all week apparently.... three sets of pelicans between there and the traffic lights where the A40 bears right, heading alongside Morrison's site .. another set of pelicans in that stretch, before hitting the lights controlling Morrisons entrance/exit ... none of them are phased ... total, utter carnage.🤬🤬

had to go look at a hutch this morning with Vicki's hubby, out on the A40, t'other side of town ... did a 5 mile detour around the lanes, circumnavigating the town, to get where I wanted to be on time ... and the reverse to get home

Double edged sword though. If people could have some patience and drive responsibly around road work then most the traffic management could be removed and everything would flow better. But because most driver are impatient disrespectful a***holes then all the extra TM and temp lights have to be added to relatively simple jobs and cause chaos. Then it's the road workers fault.
