Undertaking on motorway…

What is the legality of undertaking on a motorway? I want hard facts, along with personal beliefs and general (mis)understandings!

If some plum is dawdling along in the fast lane at 65mph and you come up behind them at 70 in lane 1, 2 (or even 3 on our local ‘smart’ motorways) are you technically allowed to maintain your legal speed and undertake, or do you hold back until they move over to allow you to overtake?

The number of drivers who sit in lane 2 (or 3 when there are 4 lanes) not technically allowing vehicles with trailers past is unbelievable, and really starting to get on my tits!

And don’t get me started on the tiny-testicled sex-pest lorry drivers who spend mile after mile holding everyone else up because their lorry can actually do 56.1 mph. I would gladly drag their fat arses from their curtain-clad wank-dens and put them to sleep on the hard shoulder!!!

That was certainly how I read it when driving in the UK.
By comparison, in Oz, you absolutely can not pass on the left where lanes are not marked (except when the car in front puts their right indicator on).
On multi-lane roads (lanes marked), you can pass on either side.

(in texas, you have to flash your lights twice before shooting)

It's a motoring offense therefore it's actually illegal you will be tracked down a by a team of detectives and risk them coming through your door in the middle of the night with an armed response team. You will then be locked up and have the key thrown away.
This is slightly different from theft and murder which is only kind of illegal and a pc will tell you of if they happen to stumble across you in five years time maybe in bad cases an asbo might be issued. And completely different to things like tax evasion which isn't really illegal and if you happen to have a position of responsibility within the government you will be asked to write a letter of apology, in really bad circumstances you may have to retire on full pay.

Possibly got a bit ‘ranty’, sorry!

Genuine question re the undertaking though.
My understanding has always been that you shouldn’t undertake. However, the exception to this is ‘if your lane is moving faster than the one next to you’ (or words to that effect) so if the fast lane is slowing for any reason and the inside is clear then you can proceed at your current speed etc.
That’s just my understanding though, might be bollox?
