Over time you'll probably still get some staining of whites. A small hotel near here has a similar filter setup and they replace white towels for new every month. They look perfect until you put them beside new ones.

That seems a bit excessive when they look fine, where are they? I could do with some towels.
There is the option to mop up that last bit for them, it seems odd they've decided to replace towels instead of cleaning the water.

You can't get the water 100% clean so over time it builds up. The couple running it are ocd about it you can barely tell.

It was my first thought, but then hotel towels are always white. Presumably so the guests can see they're fresh and clean, probably just a self imposed hotel thing.

Water authorities spend a fortune to achieve it though which as you say you don't want to.

The insulation looks like it's doing the job:

The snow has been on there for 5 days now.
I insulated the main roof too at ceiling level, there were actually areas with no insulation at all and what was there was about 3 - 4", so no-where near the current 10" or so standard. You can't really do the frost or snow test on the main roof as the chimney goes through there so warms it a bit, but it does hold snow for a reasonable length of time.

You can soften the water, this removes the last bits of anything left. Downsides are:
Initial and running cost (it needs salt putting in it).
It softens the water.
The water softness scale is 0 - 80. Zero being duckdown and 100 being gravel coming out of the tap.
We're at 10 (before filtering) so very soft, softening it more will make it feel slimy and remove any beneficial minerals in there.
To get around the feel of it you can use what is called a 'Ph correction filter' which is even more money....

Not much new has been happening, hence me not posting.
The sun has a way to go before it sets a long way to the right (over the hill) from there, but the daylight hours are increasing now, was able to play out in the recent decent weather until about 5.30 recently. I feel guilty for wishing my life away, but roll on March 31st.

Get down Benford you tart

Took advantage of the frozen fields to get about, plant the tree there in Benford and stake the others as the wind was doing them no good.

I've just had hand Op No.2 done so am having a few hrs off while the anaesthetic wears thin and the pain starts.
As with the rest of the UK, we've been treated to some lovely Winter sunsets.

The good weather has seen me outside more than in just recently and it was time to tackle this dumping ground by the entrance:

I'd previously had a prod around and surprisingly found the whole stretch to the left paved, but buried under a foot of pretty decent soil:

As you can see in the foreground we already have one layer of mill flags laid over another, but they can stay as they are until I find a use for them

We found new homes for all the stuff on top then I went in with the rusty duo to dig up a few tons of hidden stone, then found a temporary home for that too

The soil surface was already a bit low, it was going to be even lower with the stone pulled out. So I tipped in a few tons of crap soil in the bottom before putting the decent stuff over the top.

My diggering skills are getting better, but I have to admit a (hand) rake was finally called on there

The South is to the right and I let last years 6 strawberry plants go mad and throw out loads of runners which has resulted in about 80 new plants. Current thinking is to plant them to the right of that bed, sow wildflower seeds over the majority and then maybe some espalier apple trees against the wall, but we'll see, we have a few weeks to think about whilst the soil settles and the weather gets better.
Right now i'm kind of hoping we'll get some heavy rain to wash the mud away from the track, I don't think we'll have to wait long at this time of the year!

As my hand gets better and presumably as the weather gets worse i'll carry on in the house to get some jobs finished in there.

I wish I had a map like that for mine. So the darker lines are the pipes in your pic? What are the closer together finer lines? How was the water getting into the pipes?

This shows how good drainage guys were and how serious they took their job . Think of the length of time this would of taken done by hand .
I also love the fact it was all mapped out .
Now everyone wants a digger to do it all in a day with a roll of wavin coil.
