That is a truly terrible piece of journalism.
And if that's all the details that the dvsa give out then how is anyone meant to improve. And average Joe's estimation of a lorry's speed should not be acknowledged as 90% of car drivers seem to think lorry's are going to fast when they are parked up with the engine off.
He may have been going to fast but that should be witnessed by the tacho.
There’s the van he hit

Yeah it’s all well and good making a joke about it, but the fella in the van was extremely lucky to be alive after that!!

I wasn't saying he wasn't going to fast just an observation that this should be witnessed by the tacho head. Which records speed for this very purpose. Quoting car drivers opinions I think is wrong when there is a calibrated piece of equipment to record it. And the statement becomes emotive rather than factual. It would be nice if their where alot more facts like how fast he was traveling rather than too fast, how wide he was rather than too wide and what was incorrect about the chains. Noone will learn from as it is. And if we don't learn from it, it makes the accident even worse especially when it happens again.

Sorry. I should have been clear. What make and model was the van. I can’t recognize it from the pic.
My son had an accident many years ago and the car wasn’t very badly damaged. Until the fire brigade practiced roof removal on it!!

Devon Live is a horrible site.. but the article reads as though another motorist cut him free before the emergency services turned up.
Driver of the lorry should be banned for longer than 3 years and never allowed to drive anything bigger than 3.5t again. Blatantly incompetent, not even a high vis jacket hanging off the end of the blade 🤦‍♂️
Pretty sure he knew that he needed an escort vehicle and police approved route but decided to risk it….

no point sending him to prison but surely his operators licence should be permanently removed as well?

That is a better constructed article although some clarification on the chains is needed as to why they are not suitable. Had he used the wrong size where they the wrong angle to allow a secure restraint or old fashioned dogs rather than the ratchet type. It stills seems that although the dvsa claim they are their to educate they fail miserably to do so,instead intent on punishment, as is witnessed daily by the social media posts of the dvsa and commercial vehicle policing units

I think the tacho fiddling and the lack of wide load route plan and escort is the big issue?
