That's a small Brooke:
It appears as though its equivalent to an irrigation ditch, soil is heavy clay so would be surprised if its lined with anything, hard to tell with all the vegitation and neglect. There is a short section near the bridge where the sides have been build up out of stone and channel bed is stone.Be handy if we knew how wide the gap was to bridge and what construction the brooke is to begin with. Fair few gutters crossed on farms round here with concrete panels, its handy there are 3 panel manufacturers within 25 mile of here.
At that kind of span its too wide for panels and its either a proper bridge construction job or pipe it. The thing you need to know is what sort of flow there is in bad weather, no good restricting flow with a pipe.It appears as though its equivalent to an irrigation ditch, soil is heavy clay so would be surprised if its lined with anything, hard to tell with all the vegitation and neglect. Point a to point b (where the bridge is required) is approximately 8-10 meters The banks would need some building up to form a proper chanel and reduce the gradient of the slope leading on to the bridge I would think so the span would ultimately be more like 3-4 meters.
Probably will have to wait for another drought now! Raining heavily here in Wiltshire.
Yes, I'm realising it needs to be properly thought through after I watched this video on culvert hydraulics. At that kind of span its too wide for panels and its either a proper bridge construction job or pipe it. That's only relevant if the flow is great enough to pond at the front of the pipe.
If you make sure you use a pipe where the top of the pipe exceeds the height of water at maximum water flow then it won't be a problem. This is assuming that any pipe used will have less internal friction than the mud based ditch and the pipe will have the same fall as the rest of the ditch essential using the culvert pipe as an arched bridge rather than a pipe.
Did something with our local council years agoA client of mine wants to build a bridge over a small brooke. It will provide vehicular access to a field and will need to support the weigh of a tractor. The brooke floods in winter. I think the cheapest and easiest way would be to use large a large diameter pipe and somehow encase in concrete. Anyone have any experience with this and can suggest a design/material choice?

if you're getting what we had here last night and again this evening, I'd call that "heavy rainfall"I think I'll need to watch how much flow there is this winter, it does pick up quite a bit after heavy rainfall.
I clicked play, then realised it was 44 minutes long!Yes, I'm realising it needs to be properly thought through after I watched this video on culvert hydraulics.
Was quite a shower that ,how close was the storm to you ,it was about 8 miles from usif you're getting what we had here last night and again this evening, I'd call that "heavy rainfall"and some sort of thunder and lightning with it too, this evening !!
the week ain't forecast to be much better, dry weekend then 42mm of rain 'sposed to drop out the sky on Monday
If it does it might be a good time to check out yer flow![]()
I'd certainly volunteer to enter the Brooke to but the pipe in
Interesting thatYes, I'm realising it needs to be properly thought through after I watched this video on culvert hydraulics.
right on top of us and came back and forth for well over an hour ... the rain was torrential, blown in on a hell of a wind, which then dropped suddenly and some pretty epic lightning, with mega percussive accompaniment ! ... eventually rolled off towards Hereford and could see the lightning in the distance for a couple of hours ..Was quite a shower that ,how close was the storm to you ,it was about 8 miles from us
I thought that it was a good find too, .....I was hoping to see a hydrabrake make an appearance, but unfortunately notInteresting that
Yeah maintenance is a cause of hell of a lot of flooding i would thinkI thought that it was a good find too, .....I was hoping to see a hydrabrake make an appearance, but unfortunately not.
Making a change to a watercourse is proper hairy in the litigious age we live in, I'd be wondering about creating a concrete bottomed ford or possibly piping the drainage ditch and putting concrete cover over but below the general ground level (restrictions free weir) .Maintenance or lack of always seems to be a problem with culverts when upstream property gets flooding![]()
Classic case of a stich in time saves 9. Local authority did some cost cutting and got rid of their lengthsman (probably the most useful member of staff) the amount of stuff I do for them as a result of blocked/neglected ditches and drainage. Washed out tracks/errosion etc.Yeah maintenance is a cause of hell of a lot of flooding i would think
Thanks to all who sent us some rain first good storm for months last night filled all my water buttsAny chance you can send us some we had a lite shower last night but no real rainfall for over 2 months![]()
