I think one my my biggest considerations with any vehicle or machine I buy is parts availability. And long term spare parts availability comes with sales volume. My vehicles are mainly Toyota including the Hino truck. Apart from being reliable, parts are available everywhere with plenty of choice from third party suppliers and manufacturers who target vehicles with volume sales.
I have three JCB 1CX machines and although they're not a massive volume seller they have been around a while and most models share common parts. As JCB has a big sales volume in Australia, especially with its backhoes, as well as the official JCB source we have a third party provider of JCB parts at reasonable prices and high stock levels. They are also very knowledgeable and helpful which can be uncommon, and also supply secondhand parts from machines they dismantle.
While Volvo had a good backhoe a few years back, I'd hate to be relying on parts for a discontinued machine into the future. However I can get parts for my 27 year old 1CX with no problems.
And before someone points out my contradiction, yes my Haulotte Multijob is a rare machine though I've not had a parts problem. One of the considerations when purchasing it was that it was well built and components like the Deutz engine, name brand hydraulic components and axles had parts that were available from multiple sources.
