So..

What do you pay a unskilled worker? by unskilled i mean .. I have a worker who is sound. He cleans machines does what i ask is generally reliable and can move kit around without trouble. Works hard when in the yard. However he is unskilled in everything hes not a master or anything. A goafer. Needs driving to do it and all that? Not mechanical.

Young ish lad. 24.

is £80 a day reasonable i.e £10 a hour?

That sounds about right Ross, unskilled labourers on building sites around here are on about that, some of them not worth half it though.

Yeh, I’d say that’s about right, but maybe a bit of a bonus at the end of each month, just to show that he’s appreciated?...the good thing about this situation, you will be able to mould him into how you want your yard to be kept, rather than someone wanting to do it there way, a clean sheet so to speak.

The minimum wage in Norway will have no say for you, but i put em up just for the crack of it

Minimum wage per hour (from 1 June 2019):
For skilled workers: 209.70 Kr = £ 17.6

For unskilled people with no industry experience: 188.40 Kr = £ 15.9

For unskilled people with at least one year of industry experience: 196.50 Kr = £ 16.5

For employees under 18: 126.50 Kr = £ 10.7

An experienced 360 operator will normally get paid 260,0 Kr = £ 22

What one million pounds look like?

All these prices show just how far out the AG game is! 4 years ago as a fully trained mechanic I was on £7.50... Hence the reason for me leaving, that and a lack of regular training to keep me current. Oh and chasing round after a halfwit had already had a go. :cautious:

So i'd say £10.00/hr is a very fair price.

Ag is exempt from a lot of things and unfortunately that includes paying people acceptable money. All part of the race to the bottom. Did the supermarkets start it or did the farmers allow themselves to be pushed into the floor?
Still, plenty of young farmers who will work for nothing as long as they have a shiny tractor they can drive to look good on instagram. 😩

And that is the cause of it's problems....

I can find a halfwit to drive a tractor tomorrow morning, for £7.50 a hour, and they will think it's wonderful..... they will also think they are making good money because after a 20hr day it doesn't look like such a shite wage.

Same with plant unfortunately, and Lorries.... Plenty of em looking for a easy life in a cab and prepared to spend thousands on training in order to receive under £12hr!

Sadly though, no matter what money you pay, there are few good men or even boys available these days...

Brutal isnt it.. A good fitter round here must be on £15 + a hour. Years ago in 2012 when i sold new equipment our grade A fitters with years of experience were £12 a hour plus O/T...

Sort of related to the original post...some of my experiences on pay which are of no relevance today.

A good few years ago when I went i started as an operator I was on roughly three times what my Dad was earning on the land. After ten good years the company I was with put us on the books (no choice, take or leave) at just under agricultural rates and they wondered why most of the long-timers were gone in under a year. Round here rates have now got back up to equivalently where they were at the outset. It’s always supply and demand. We have a constant issue with companies (agencies) trying to poach our drivers.

I’ve had the experience more than once of seeing some seat-filler appear on site on more money for less ability, and being told that they’ll be gone before me. That bit came true once as I was kept on extra hours to put right a batter that was between three foot high and two foot low, if you get the picture. All this when there were long-term guys on dumpers begging for a chance to get on a 360 or blade.

Also a lot of company’s seem to have forgotten that loyalty is a two way street. I went To work one place on the promise of a years work and got dropped after two weeks, as his contract with the gas board got undercut and he lost all the projected work, (not his fault, but that didn’t help me). Two years later I went back to him, had a full-on year, but when things slowed I asked for a bit of honesty, as I’d been offered something else to take me through winter. I was told I wouldn’t be the next one out the door, which was true, I was the next but one, but missed the boat for the winter work. Come January I was sorted with two solid years in front of me, and this guy couldn’t understand why I didn’t drop everything to go back to him to “help him out” for six weeks.

Tiny, you need to start looking round with your skill set. Either you’ll find something better paid and take it, or your present mob will match the money to keep you, but don’t be worried to look at the grass on the other side of the fence. End of the day when it comes time for them to downsize, rightsize or restructure, there’ll be no loyalty to you. Don’t accept that you’re “only” worth anything.

I have looked around but there are few and far between opportunities around here and unfortunately although i have a good skill set base they keep the training just under the lever where you can go in to bigger equipment. I went for a job in September emptying site loos (have a background in aviation and one of my tasks was to empty plane toilets) i know it is not the most appealing job but that was paying 2 grand a year basic over my wage plus lots of extras. TBH iamat the point where anything that pays more and is full time i will take

Doesn’t matter what job it is tiny, been happy is the most important thing, and more money with extras goes a long way, loyalty doesn’t pay the bills or put food on the table, the days where it used to count have long gone, those firms are very few and fare between now a days.

@tinydigger IMHO it's the same as Ollie says, f**k what it is happiness is key (Says the miserable bastard that's utterly f***ed off with plant hire 😂).

There is no loyalty from firms anymore, even small outfits have become accounts lead and large firms actually have created H&S based systems where you'll get a bonus for shopping your mates in.

Just my two penneth, Have you considered grabbing another job and then setting up a examinations service to run on the side as and when? If you've got the Cert's then surely all that's needed are some basic tools and insurance? Lots of people out there that would use a reliable on site tester to keep it legal?

Think outside the box. A lad who used to work with me now works for Zurich doing lifting inspections.

I give a lad the same but cash on ad hoc basis. Think it's about as low as you can go to get someone half right. Have had cheaper but literally only good if you need a lift or something
