Talking of tickets, Is there a ticket for finding the damaged bit in a burried electricial cable? I know they use a special, very expensive , tester.

It's done in two parts, one is a resistance test that basically says roughly how many meters away from the test point is the fault.

Part two is the smell...... Burning cables give off one that can be detected.
