What digger should i buy?!

Hi All,

I'm a sole trading landscaper with plenty of work on the horizon and I know that buying a digger is a good decision for me. Aside from landscaping I quite like doing digger and operator hire one off jobs, quick bit of income without the headache and stress of managing larger projects.

The question is, what digger should I buy? I'm fairly certain that it has to be a micro and have narrowed it down to the following:

Jcb 8010
Bobcat e10
Kubota u10-5
Takeuchi tb 210r

I know there are others but it's making my head spin looking through the brochures trying to compare stats.

I like that the 8010 is more powerful, but it doesn't have the servo controls or twin acting aux. I like that bobcat e10 give good deals on finance, but is the machine as reliable as the new Kubota u10-5?
Takeuchi, I've no idea what it's like - I presume it's pretty good!

Any advice or input welcome.

A new jcb 8010 is eye wateringly expensive.

But a bloody good machine.

Servo controls are a must for me. For me too, a micro must be a true micro- 710mm. Many are a little bit more powerful, but 750 or 760mm wide, which when access is tight can be the difference between getting in or not. The tb210 and the kubota 10-5 are both too tubby for my liking as a micro, although I have the luxury of larger machines too.

Right now you will struggle to get hold of anything unfortunately. It may well be a case of whatever is in stock (if anything) you’ll have to take.

There’s plenty things that are better on other micros than the bobcat, but lack of width non negotiable for me.

Plenty of room to turn the revs up on the engine they fit, I wonder how well it would improve things?

Think you need to work out the average width of the gates you are going through as Doobin said there are quite a lot of width variances in the micro sector so that may narrow down your search criteria

Of that lot the Kubota is the cheapest should be decent but at 750mm wide ideally needs minimum of 800mm to get through.

Don't discount the non servo machines they are narrower but do tend to have a counterweight but some will do 90 boom swing either one way or both which is something I miss from my old tb108 that and the lift over height, plus the ability to drag around a full bulk bag of pea gravel which my dx10 cannot do

Hi thanks. I'm in the southwest near Bath. You're right I can't find a micro digger for love nor money. There's no point in buying second hand, some are more expensive than brand new! I accept I'm going to have to wait a while.

What are jcb like for lead time? It's not to much of a wait for their dumpers at the moment. I think they said July.

Owed a few over the years, still got the last one I bought brand new in 2010.

As I said bloody good machines, only thing is jobs are now tighter than ever and the zts on the e10/dx10 makes things alot easier.

I've not had a chance to operate a zts machine.

It helps in tight spots but can make them more unstable when been greedy with a big bucket.

Generally how much are those different models of mini digger new?

I'm thinking of buying one and found this forum though Google. It is really hard to find prices for mini diggers by searching on Google, annoyingly dealers don't seem to have prices on their sites, they just say contact for a quote.

Euro comach was I think several thousand more.
I would expect every micro to be £17-£20000 Inc now with a 6 month to one year lead time.

Wow that is expensive! I was hoping to pay closer to the £10k guess I was a bit naive.

That is long lead time too, is that because of shipping issues due to covid?

Massive lead times at moment.ive enquired after another ecr25d volvo,but apparently Volvo order books are closed but dealer will take an order,with a deposit and I may get delivery in Feb,May or even november next year but no one knows.thats for standard build too.any extras and will take a lot longer

I think all servo micros are about 15k+vat now give or take £500. Non servo will be slightly less but unless you really need the smallest micro you can buy i don't see why you would bother with one. I believe wacker neuson are bringing out a micro on servos but with how everyone lead times are be lucky to see one this year.

There is a ‘ex demo’ dx10 with 400 hours on eBay currently for £17k.
