Hi want to pick the brains of welders for years i have welded up steel hydraulic pipes when they have rotted through and they have been ok but the last two that i have tried to do have failed .the only difference is that i got a inverter welder rather than the old buzz box with normal mild steel rods ,would this cause it to fail or have i lost the knack

are you running +ve earth .. inverters are DC ... what rods are you using ?
