" You are looking at the colossal Hook Block and wire rope system of one of the largest semi-submersible crane vessels (SSCVs) in the world—likely belonging to Heerema Marine Contractors. This vessel is the definition of maritime might!

A Marvel of Heavy Lifting Engineering

This incredible sequence highlights the sheer engineering required for moving offshore platforms, wind turbine foundations, and massive subsea modules:

The Hook Block: The massive yellow structure is the main hook block. The label visible (0:15) reads "SWL 10000mt"—meaning Safe Working Load is 10,000 metric tons (or 22 million pounds)! This single hook system is capable of lifting the weight of an entire warship or a giant offshore platform module.

The Wire Rope System (0:18 - 0:24): Look at the forest of thick steel wire ropes running up to the crane boom. The load is distributed across hundreds of these high-tensile steel strands. The complexity and number of lines underscore the incredible forces this system must manage.

The Workers as Scale: The human workers, dressed in safety orange (0:01, 0:30), appear tiny in comparison, emphasizing the breathtaking, industrial scale of this floating machine. Their job involves meticulously securing and checking the massive slings (like the one being lowered at 0:06) that connect the hook to the item being lifted.

The Night Shift: The dramatic lighting against the pre-dawn or dusk sky creates a powerful, almost cinematic atmosphere, showcasing the 24/7, high-stakes nature of offshore heavy construction.

This incredible piece of equipment is essential for developing the world’s energy and transport infrastructure deep at sea.

Can you imagine the forces involved in lifting 10,000 tons? "

A few made their last journey to here I would imagine….

Absolutely amazing to me that places like that exist. Apart from the odd corner of a farm yard everything round here has been cleared out.

:oops::oops: " Tower crane operators can earn more than a hundred grand a year but today some are striking for more. "

" Wollfkran UK said that its top earning operator in 2025 grossed just short of £110,000 and average earnings are almost £66,000. This puts crane operators on salary par with chartered civil engineers, construction managers and train drivers, it said.
The company also says that since 2016 its crane utilisation has decreased by 26% and the number of cranes that it has on hire has reduced by around 40%. Average rental rates have also been hit hard, reducing by around 20-25%, depending on the crane model. Yet pay rates have gone up by nearly 40%, it said. "

I guess if you are sticking a 13 tonne (minimum!) machine with a pecker on the roof of a building then that building is not long for this world, so any damage suffered isn’t a problem….
Very lucky escape all round!
