JCB 801.4 1996 top hydraulic ram, how to open ram to replace seal, have tried everything will not open ,seen the videos on you tube but noes not help,
or does one know of a second hand ram available

you can try, but it will be HARD (12.9) ... personally I'd sharpen up a TC masonry drill, the right size, to a chisel edge and quietly drill it out - low speed and some cutting fluid or plenty of oil to keep the tip cool - get it hot and the TC tip will melt out of the shank (only brazed in) and leave you with an even bigger headache

Good dormer drill bit will drill it out.. in a pillar drill if you have it rather than a hand drill

Disagree - HSS is gonna struggle at that size on a 12.9 grub screw Aiden ... deffo a pillar drill job and even then a high risk of snapping the HSS bit - chisel edged TCT scraper bit has far less risk attached

How about a split point cobalt bit? I drilled out a small grub screw a while back. Wasnt the top brand set,but it got it done with a bit of oil..
Definately drill stand if possible,i snapped a couple.

I'll go see if mine has one, but'd guess it'll be M8 / 5/16", so circa 8mm long, looking at your pic -- they're usually 'square' - as long as the dia., as a rule, unless it's an 'extended' one, then could be twice the diameter

Had a closer look with a magnifier glass it's a slotted split dowel, rusted in. any ideas how to get out ?

If it is a roll pin then it was never intended to come out.
I've had major struggles getting the cap off similar rams that didn't have any securing pins.
Commercially it is new ram time, if it was my job in my own time I'd plasma cut a bit of 10 mm plate out to just fit over the rod and arc weld it (as in proper heat) to the cap and treat it like a slogging wrench.
Once it's out it all gets a whole lot easier

no sign of anything similar in mine Boyo ... pin type 'C' spanner on the end caps and nothing else ... odd that yours has a roll pin in it -- spark eroder's about the only thing that'll shift that

Before I try any of the suggestions above will try and get an used replacement ram, any ideas where to find a replacement ram ? Also any specialist ram repairers around that does not cost an arm and a leg ?

Have you tried a local hydraulic repair shop ,we have a few here ,Tim Sutton in ross on Wye is shite hot on stuff like that
