Bet you buy the tonne bags next time. At only £14 per tonne difference my time is worth more than that and so is my back.
The problem is ton bags need to be stored inside. Take up alot of space. And if you have a few left for a while it will crust up. These plastic bags will sit out in the rain. May find some shed space yet though 🙈

surely you'd lift a pallet full up to a strategic position, slit the bags and drop the contents of 'em in without much in the way of handling them ?? .... I like the placcy bags ..... lasts bloody ages in 'em

I know they're not the most popular of booms, but i do like the way they function ... wear would be their biggest downfall i'd guess ... on a poorly maintained specimen at least !! (y)
Those types of off-setting boom are quite common on road railers. At least, that’s the only place I’ve seen them used. You can dig in line with your tracks without swinging, so you can keep a decent counterweight on the back. As you say, though, that’s a lot of pins to grease and definitely not a heavy digging boom. Again, horses for courses.
