Volvo ecr58d and ecr40d opinions

Greetings to all , new member and first post to the forum. Just curious what the over all opinion on these two excavators is , build quality,serviceability, tippyness over the side, strengths, weaknesses, problems etc. I currently own a Volvo ec60e that I purchased new fall of 2017, my first excavator which I've been tremendously happy with. Got about 1140hrs on it now with zero issues, been very diligent in my preventative maintenance and so far I've been the only operator. Main use has been taking out cherry tree stumps on my cherry farm , (bout 2000 stumps removed so far). I'm considering buying one of these two reduced tail units probably used with fairly low hours to use as a rental. Volvo excavators in my area are somewhat new but seem to be gaining popularity. On your side of the pond I believe they've got a longer history of use. Thanks for any thoughts and opinions!

There is a newish volvo 5 ton zts machine on face book with horrendous slew wear and volvo don’t want to know.search joe Patterson or Anglian plant

one would hope so James, but looked welded in the full page vid I viewed ... a lot of cranes are welded - sometimes on both bottom and top :oops: :mad:

I’ve never seen one welded on an excavator, can’t see how it could be hardened properly if it was then welded on? Any slew ring issues would write the machine off!
Admittedly I’ve only viewed it on my phone, will have a look on a bigger screen.

Reading the comments don’t show Volvo in a very good light 😳

Bob Moore was a brilliant bloke at volvo and I have to say he was the most helpful person I ever know in my 58 years in plant and farming.im sure he would be fighting the case.never been the same since he left.we are all customers to receive money from these days for most companies.back up is the most important thing.

id small claims court Volvo UK very cheap option and just the media coverage should shame them to doing the right thing.

Regarding the above I posted some of my issues with my ecr25d mainly the gator around the left hand controls that split 3 months out of warranty and dealer would not replace it but gave me a price of around £200 for a new one.anyway volvo are monitoring all of this and I got contacted by someone on messenger who happened to be volvos area manager for the north of the uk and asked about my problem.to cut a long story short my local dealer called at dinner time and said volvo had been onto them and to send me a new gator free of charge and they had no idea I’d had a problem as dealer had not told them.this is what expected from volvo and a big thank you to them.it seems they don’t get to hear about the issues as dealers usually deal with customers.if anyone gets issues it’s best to go to the top if not happy with dealer response.

+1 on Bob Moore, brilliant bloke. Have Had 2000 hours trouble free out of our ecr58d , brilliant machine, even our ecr58 plus has been bullet proof at 5000 hours, they are korean made. That ecr50 with the slew ring wear and the smaller stuff is french made and the quality isn't as good! I've had to spend money on the ec35c and ecr48 that we have, biggest f****ng annoyance is weeping hydraulic hoses where the ends haven't been crimped properly and you have to take the cab off and the stupid one piece floor that also supports the seat out of the way to get to them:mad: I won't buy a volvo now as the local dealer is shite and the local Smt don't deal in the smaller stuff.

That video didn't look good at all , less than 2500hrs wonder if it was greased properly. I couldn't tell for sure but really can't believe that bearing would be welded on , unless Volvo had supreme confidence in it's integrity? Over here there doesn't seem to be any of the 50d's , they jump from the 40d to the 58d. Any owners of the 40 or 58's with any first hand opinions? Thanks for the replies!

Thanks Volbar , you replied while I was still typing. Yes I believe the 58's are all made in S. Korea as well as my 60e. I did notice on the serial tag of the 40s I've seen, made in France. Good information to know may look more towards the 58s. Weeping hydraulic hoses would irritate me to no end , the real pisser is trying to access them. One of the things I've been impressed with my 60e is it hasn't leaked even a dribble, knock on wood.

I don't think you'll go wrong with the Korean built machines, I've not had any expensive failures of any kind in the 20 years of owning korean built Volvo's.
I find the 58d powerful, fast cycle times, I only run 1/2 to 3/4 throttle and it sips fuel, not as fast on tracking as the takeuchi's etc but will dig like f**k.
Only annoyance is the dash beeping whenever you press a button, why has everything got to make a noise these days!

The owner of the machine with the dodgy slew ring mentioned above. posted on fb yesterday that he has had the slew brake fail on a couple of ecr25 machines.the owner was not happy and these are all self drive machines so they may have been abused but I don’t know

Same experience I've had with my Korean built 60e, usually run it at 1600-1750rpm uses .9gal/hr. Can do an impressive amount of work on a gallon of fuel. Same 2.6L engine as 58d. My one annoyance is in they're effort to simplify the climate control they've actually made it more complicated pushing buttons, has the capacity though.

yes you can't underestimate how rough a operator can be on a machine that he doesn't own!

I have seen some of the animals that hire off joe as he cross hires lifting gear off us and we cross hire access platforms off him plus a couple of our ex plant staff work for him so no doubt there is a little bit of abuse there but still shouldn't be like that as he does look after them
