Volvo ecr28 problem

If it were mine, at this stage, I think I’d get a few hoses made up (I realise there’s a cost to this) so I could link the left tract to the right, and right to left, but at the track motors. So everything was untouched before the motors, you’d simply have the pipe work extend so right was left etc. that would eliminate everything on the track frame, motors etc.
if this test proved that the fault was not in anything on the track frame, I’d swap the hoses at the spool block and test again. Hopefully then proving the fault is before or after the spool block. I know there’s a lot going on there, but at least it’s narrowing things down.

It still feels like it could be a rotary coupling issue to me, although this has been checked I think? But they also threw two new track motors at it before checking the rotary! Which seemed like madness to me, so anything is possible.
Totally agree! Seams a lot of unnecessary cost and parts used with out any real testing!
First off, if you are taking everything they say as word, then I would be checking the undercarriage thoroughly, If everything is true then the problem would be on that track frame somewhere! check the idler etc! Check that the track is not catching or rubbing on the frame somewhere!

If all is good there, do as shovelhands suggests, and go and get 4 or 6 hoses made up, to extend them from one track to the other, and see if the problem switches sides.... id be surprised if it doesn't!

Check that they have defiantly had the rotary joint out, on a small machine like that it wont be easy to get out and they may have blagged it!

Also i had a machine once with a rotary joint leaking/cracked internally.... you could get hoses made from the valve block to the motor to bypass it to eliminate it also.

We are all keen to get to the bottom of this one 😁

It doesn't mean it came out if it's got a crack in it you might not spot it while on the machine or they could've rolled a seal.

Tbh being a towable machine I'd take it to my local hydraulic bloke and I'm 100% sure he would solve it in a hour. Especially having a hose machine and a shed full of adapters on hand

It’s what I do!
Would be better to take supply straight from the spool valves direct through hoses to the motors, don’t go through the rotary joint!

Hi, I have a Volvo ecr28 my problem is, it’s pulling to left over a very short distance, it won’t go
up a very small incline. It Digs fine, no problem. The digger was sent to a large reputable company for investigation and repair. Attached is the report.

Please see below a summarisation of my engineer's reports, unfortunately I do not have an official report from Volvo, but because I was present whilst he was here, I will summarise what was investigated on your machine.

Work Carried out Volvo ecr28

  • Washed off machine
  • Removed counterbalance
  • Checked over main pressures which were found at 235 bar
  • Pressures found to be dropping when machine was warm
  • Drained hydraulic oil from machine
  • Removed hydraulic pump as the testing carried out pointed the hydraulic pump was at fault.
  • Fitted new hydraulic pump to machine
  • Changed hydraulic filter
  • Filled hydraulic system with 40lts of new oil
  • Tested hydraulic pressures at valve block now at 250 bar
  • Stripped down king post
  • Removed boom and king post from machine
  • Pressed out bushes from king post and replaced with new
  • Removed bushes from boom arm and replaced with new
  • Removed bushes from chassis of machine and replaced with new
  • Refitted king post and boom to machine
  • Fitted new pins and greased

When starting the machine to move it to the wash area to be cleaned off, machine would not start and seemed like something hydraulically was stuck on after investigation and testing we found this issue was being caused by a faulty pump. We contacted Volvo who took the pump back and issued a full credit. A new pressure relief valve was fitted to the machine as this was found to be what was initially causing the drop in pressure (this was advised to us by Volvo).

Valve changed and the pressure issue was solved.

I then spoke with yourselves to tell you the machine was ready, at this time you asked me if the machine was now tracking straight to which I replied now the issues noted above would not cause the machine to track off to one side.

Work carried out

  • Carried out flow and pressure tests on the track motors & at the valve block
  • This determined that there was a fault with the left-hand track motor
  • Ordered and fitted x 2 new track motors
  • Machine still carrying the same fault
  • We then stripped and resealed the rotary joint.
  • This also did not cure the issue
  • We swapped all components from left to right
  • The issue remained V
  • We then swapped the four hoses from left to right that go from the rotary joint to the track motor, to check for hoses delamination or blockages.
  • The issue remained

The next point of call was to get SMT Volvo to attend our workshop to investigate the issue on the machine.

Work carried out by Volvo & our Engineer

  • Reset all pressures on machine
  • Tested pressures as at valve block and pump
  • Tested pressures when dead ending services to the tracks
  • Checked over all work we had carried out
  • Could not determine what the issue was
  • Mentioned maybe trying another track motor as they may be a fault in one of the new ones

I then spoke with our supplier of the track motors and explained the issue we were having and they we certain that it must have been a faulty unit, so they agreed to send another track motor out to us.

We then fitted the replacement motor and found that the issue remained.

Whilst the tracks were removed, we decided to swap the tracks from left to right in case this was the issue, which it was not. We also check over all the under carriage which again was all fine apart from X 1 bottom roller being seized, this was not found to be the cause of the issue as we removed the bottom roller and ran the machine with it off and the issue remained.

As mentioned to you on the phone of Friday, we at a loose end with regards to your machine and the issue that remains. We have spoken to many different people within our industry to try and sort the issue, but all are coming back with the same prognosis as we are.

Can anybody help, all suggestions greatly appreciated.

Kevin
not sure if this will help but had a same problem on a old red neuson my fitter jacked it up on blade and bucket put a chalk mark (or bit of tape )on tracks and set them going with no load to prove if one was faster than other wwe then found that a pipe had been renewed to one side with a metric sized pipe when others were imperial same pressure but restricted flow hope this makes sense

OK, I just checked the manual and the track section of the valve block is cable controlled! I'm betting it is a stretched cable or one in need of adjustment somewhere:mad:
thank **** for someone with a manual .... speaks volumes about the so called pro.s if this is the issue :oops::mad:

Oh while we are on the subject of manuals, please give your views on( this page has been left blank) when it’s not actually blank is it?

@diggerman did you get to the bottom of this?
as CPS the travel is on cables, how to adjust is below.

Well here we go, 6 months later and the Volvo Ecr28 has returned home. The bad news is that it is still not working properly, in fact it is probably worse than before. The good news is that they have not changed me for all the work they have done. The latest update is that they think it is contamination that may be causing the problem?. I can’t believe it cannot be solved. I’m being advised to sell It and replace. Any further advice, would be greatly appreciate.

they've failed to make it work .... not fit for purpose ... make 'em buy it back -- cost plus consequentials ;)

Give us a nod if you intend to fix it yourself!😊
Hi, I’m not sure what to do with it , I payed £16500 for it last year and not had any use for it. I can’t believe it can’t be repaired. I have spoken to several digger owners and they all seem to say mechanics are pretty hopeless. Ie not mechanics just fitters, keep changing parts till it works and then send you a bill. They’re advising me know it could be contamination even though the oil has been changed several times and new filters.
