The top is made up from 50x175mm beams, topped with 18mm MDF. The mdf is not ideal because it soaks up most fluids. Because the main layer is beams I needed something that gave me a nice smooth surface, hence the mdf. It is also cheap and very easy to replace if required.

I wanted something strong enough to take a gearbox or part of an engine block. Probably a bit over engineered but it works very well.

The drill stand next to it is also homemade. Unfortunately I forgot to take photo’s after this one. View attachment 20596

My next project is a welding table of some sort.
With 20mm hole pattern. Got an MDF version and it's brilliant for clamping etc.

If you've got a 2in thick timber base under your top you could always use a sheet of alloy instead of the mdf.

3mm steel'd be better ..... ali marks too easily and will 'gash' ... I have a couple of 4ft2 benches with 18mm ply top and a 3mm plate covering it ... taken a reasonable amount of abuse over the many years i've had them ... ex-shool workbenches that had the 2.5" hard wood tops 'liberated' off them :( .... the frames're gonna give out 'fore the tops do

Goes rusty though. Depends what you're using it for stainless would be harder wearing but the beauty of alloy is if you're rolling a gearbox casing around on it for example, being softer it won't burr any edges on it.

In industrial work shops, didn't they use end grain timber blocks for the flooring.
They did. They soak up oil like sponges, swarf gets embedded in them and they’re impossible to keep clean enough for modern manufacturing. Perkins ripped the last ones out in the early ‘2000’s. they would have made good fuel blocks.

If you have a good strong worktop you could fit a sheet of plastic sheet from Direct plastics, easy to clean, won't go rusty, doesn't damage what you are working on and cheap to replace.
Just a thought. We've done it with a few benches next to machine tools at work.

Personally I prefer a wooden worktop as it deadens the sound a little bit compared to a metal worktop. Obviously both have their advantages/disadvantages and it all comes down to personal preference.

@Lancs Lad , could you please share the build of your new welding here? I could do with some ideas for the future.

I was in a railway workshop in Switzerland few years ago and noticed the floor with wooden blocks.
They had some massive machinery in there🤤

By the time I have made the table I would have forgotten what I needed it for!!
He lost me when he started doing woodwork on it!!🤣🤣🤣🤣

very nice but lacking in rib stiffening .... 6mm plate'll deflect badly, pulled down hard ......and 6mm tappings ain't really enough of a purchase on a bolt .. equates to half nuts and could/will strip too easy with any serious torque applied ....... he has some nice ideas though and a multi fix table is ultra useful

also a damned sight easier and warmer on the feet all day, than concrete (y)

@Lancs Lad , that is a perfect idea. will be looking to build one myself!

First project of the year will be rebuilding the engine in my Patrol. :(
