How do you tell if a turbo is working. Got a tractor with 1 on and you can't here it and its always seemed a rather gutless

Put a pressure gauge on either the Air intake side inlet or outlet and see if there is a pressure fluxuation when revs changed

A simple hillbilly test , give the boost pipe a squeeze (if that’s possible) and see if you feel the pipe inflate when you Rev it.

Depends what its on they don't always make the big difference people expect. Like your gutless dumpers now knocking 74hp out where an older turbo'd dumper would put out near on 100hp. Turbo is on for emissions not power.

Any split/leak between the turbo and inlet manifold will seriously reduce performance mate, check all pipes and connections carefully.
Knackered turbos are normally pretty obvious - you’ll get exhaust smoke and can often hear them.

While you're looking be worth taking intake pipe off and having a look in turbo. Tiny bit of play no big deal but if blades are catching sides time for a change whether working or not. As said check for leaks between turbo and inlet manifold. Actuator could be stuck open

I can't remember exactly and learned on petrol cars but I think a bit of up and down play is ok but in out is bad although I could be wrong there.

Fuel pump leak
This weekend's problem. Case cx90 tractor. Its dripping fuel from this little hole.

I'd say you will notice a difference with the pump overhauled... the boost diaphragm will most likely be gone meaning it will be gutless

I reckon the fuel pump is one fitted with a boost diaphragm, basically upping fuelling inline with boost pressure being generated. The diaphragm can split and make the machine feel dead and lack of black smoke. As others have suggested check the inlet hoses on the pressure side of the turbo for leaks and also the exhaust side up to the turbo although unlikely to have any issue on that engine with exhaust side. if you remove the inlet pipe off the turbo there should be a very small amount of play up/down left right and zero front to back. if you can move the spindle enough that the blades touch the outside of the housing or the blades are marked a turbo may be required.

Thing is its probably never done any hard work. I bought it off a stable yard that had it new. Think they only used it for loader work, the pick up hitch didn't work, pto and lever was seized and the arms didn't move

Waste gate for regulating boost pressure should it get too high it bleeds of extra gas to slow the turbine speed and produces less boost.

Get pump done first its the most likely issue. If a turbo is gone you'd know be it smoke rattling or worse.

You won't be able to get any kind of time travel unless you connect up the flux capacitor in a very particular way
