This, above all else, is what really boils my piss.

I don't get to hear what they add, but I know a few years ago when were were subbing to Carillion on a job we were getting constant abuse from the people on the ground as to how much we were charging. In the end I got fed up with it as I considered what I had quoted to be pretty fair. When I said that they came back with how can £xxx be reasonable and Carillion had added 30% just to produce the paperwork. They never came to site or checked anything.

Auto levels and total stations. Only the basics obviously, I would dread to think how long you would have to sit in a classroom to become fully versed with it.

Automatic Levels are simple enough, although, I'll usually go for a laser or use the robotic first if I can (one man job), hardest think is booking it in correctly, hopefully teaching you Height of Collimation method not the rise and fall.

Hardest trick is learning to read the staff, usually find people have a subconscious preference to what they see through the telescope.

I would say with the Total station, it will mostly be teaching to use one brand, usually Leica. However and i'm biased as a Topcon user and think Magnet is much simpler to use.

Thanks. It was a really good course and the bloke taking it was really good. Definitely one of the best courses I've done for actually learning things. And plenty of tricks with the auto level to try and minimise miss readings. We did do h.p.c but I found working it out a struggle. Not the maths but I found once I had gone through a couple of temporary bench marks I tend to loose my place and forget which column I'm adding or subtracting.


Yes they had Leica on site but we are supposed to be sent topcon Leica and Trimble emulator software to go on the computer so as to get a feel for each device. They also give 6 month support after the course with plenty of videos and email help should we forget anything.
Now I really want to go out and have a go with it in the real world.

Completely remote just have to send in copies of paperwork you are filling in anyway, have a video chat with an assessor and a letter from a line manager saying your competent.
And for that they will charge you a grand. I honestly can't see it being more than half a days work for them. And really doesn't prove anything at all.

That is why you should do the Asbestos Awareness training and what the legislation is all about (although you didn't say what you did when you found the suspected asbestos), but in my work there is close to zero chance of coming across asbestos.

We've found it buried in the ground before now, all my estimates clearly state no asbestos removal

Check online, I’ve heard you can now do the renewals on line, under similar conditions to doing a speed awareness course. You need a camera on and treat it as exam conditions as you’re monitored.

Pointless courses? Over the last year I had to do Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, then Sexism in the Workplace.

Also done the CPCS Professional Assessment for operators, forklift renewal, first aid renewal, mid-year resus and defib, NPORS forward tipping dumper, CPCS H&S, Plant Management and Safety and 360 lifting. Doing a mobile hydraulics course later this year. I’ve had over 40 years practical, time to do the theory.

Just witnessed an NVQ assessor at work, assessing a lad who did his 360 last year. If ever there was an easy way to earn £600 that was it. I filled in more paperwork as witness than the assessor did.

I think it very much depends on the subject and how much you already know.
This was very much that you where already doing the job and experienced but need to put a qualification to it. It is in reality a needed part of the qualification industry as bu**er sitting through classes being taught how to do things you already do by someone who doesn't really know what they are talking about.

im currently doing nvq 6/7. Now that's even more £££.

I really need to do something as I would really struggle to get the same job anywhere else without it.
There was some information floating around about the exact documents they would require you to submit which made it look relatively easy. Still alot of time and money.

think I have said before when crane tickets came in I had to get all my lot done (including myself) - trainers asked if they could 'borrow' one of my cranes ... " er no - at what you're charging me you'll bloody well hire it " ... rocked up for the days' 'practical element' .. this muppet climbs into the top cab - couldn't start it - "you 'll need to set it from the lower cab first " .. got it running for him and he proceeded to pick the boom off the rest whilst 'trying' to winch down off the capture. At which point I'm in the cab door asking him how many cranes he'd operated and what they were? " um this is the first " " out -- NOW -- or you'll have this on its side in the next two minutes - you need to put yer riggers down 'fore doing anything else - you stand down there while I get it set up " and that was the last time he touched the machine ... he had no idea whatsoever ... we spent the following day tying him knots in the 'classroom' ... what a f**kin' fiasco that was
