Million miles + tick.
livestock trailers, cattle, sheep, pigs, goats, poultry, tick but no horses.
unbaffled water bowsers on & off road tick
unbalanced indivisible items, well seeing as most large or single item loads are this I would give it a tick but with a rider of nothing crazy
Wow, if you add in the “thousands of hours sat next to people talking action to prevent death / crashes”. (Tick), I suppose I’d better listen to your opinion.

Three years ago we sent six lads for trailer training. The only two who came back able to reverse properly were the two who asked for some pointers and practised in the yard before the training. In fairness, they can all drive forwards OK with a trailer, and know where all the best cafes are on the test route. They weren’t told how to secure a load, and not much about the rules around MAM, axle weights, nose weight etc. Hence my opinion, respected or not, that this trailer license requirement as rolled out was a wasted opportunity to make things safer. Getting rid of all the home made packing crates on pram wheels would do far more for road safety, IMH O. Be interesting to see the stats going forwards.

Again I will repeat it. Thats all down to the choice of trainer.

All of that is in the syllabus & should be taught.
Lots dont as its not in the actual test. However when you are short of time due to the course booked being to short / cheap then corners get cut.
I used to get lots of requests to do all the training & test in one day. Sometimes even two clients in one day. You cant have good standards, high first time test results & cover the requirements & do courses that short. Its one of the reasons that nationally about 30% of all tests are fails yet my results were over 95% first time passes.

Re knowing all the cafes I know exactly what you mean. You can see some vehicles parked up in the same spots.
On mine you got a short lunch break & thats it unless the client is really struggling to keep up.
Most go home shattered.

Most want to book the shortest / cheapest course possible but then you have the situation you have outlined.
As they say pay peanuts.....

I'll pipe up and say I learnt a good bit when I did my trailer test and my class2. Both with same trainer and 10 years apart. At the time of my trailer test back in 2008 I gave some of the advice given to me to a bloke who had grandfather rights, the week after he said thanks for the info as it had helped him with reversing.

As regards class one, I cannot say any local to me send you out with wagon and drag they are all proper Arctics

Re the wagon & drag / artic.

Locally we have one company that only did artic one that only does wagon & drag.
(we have a thrird company but they dont warrant talking about)
The wagon & drag is getting an artic now the rules have changed.

One is not better than the other.
Locally there are lots of place an artic cant get to yet a wagon & drag can.
Ideally you should have to prove competence in both or get a licence restricted to one or the other.
Just like class 2 & 3 drivers got restricted to draw bar only when it was changed in 97 to C & CE.

So have the UK gone straight to class 1 now with no need to take class 2 ?

I strongly disagree.

A proper artic is a far more laborious and difficult animal to a Wag and Drag..... the later normally having the ease of transhipping goods from truck to trailer to get to difficult spots. A artic also has finickity realisms such as the arse cutting the corner and the front projecting out the side when making sharp turns..... drag trailer follows the wag, she's fine provided you have enough drag to counteract the other wag too....

Of course neither of these is anywhere near the set required to pull a Wagon and 4 wheeled Dolly trailer drag.... but these are very rare in the UK.

Proving competence on anything is about as useful as sticking your head in a pot of mayonnaise..... bottom line is experience is what's required and is often lacking from drivers, trainers and testers combined.....

Four years ago in Sweden, mate and me watched an eight wheeler reverse a six wheeled drag on a bogie, off a snowed up narrow street with cars parked all round, down a steep frozen ramp onto a loading dock at the back of a supermarket. Blind side, zero shunts. We had the feeling it wasn’t his first go.

My mates dad up until about 5years ago ran a 6wheel Foden with a 4 wheel dolly drag. Was amazing to watch him reverse it into places you’d never think possible. He’s recently re-cabbed it so may see it back on the road. I remember him telling me the story of a big ego’d driver telling him he “could drive anything” yet when thrown the keys couldnt reverse it off the pit!

Imposed load or not makes no difference to the lucence needed.

As simple as possible
Whats the weight of the vehicle & Does it have more than 9 or 17 seats in total= licence type
0-3500kg with 9 seats or less B
3501kg to 7500kg with 9 seats or less C1
3501kg to 32000kg with 9 seats or less, unless STGO C
Over 9 but 17 or under weighing under 7500kg D1 (New D1's older ones had no weight limit)
Over 9 & weighs more than 7500kg Or over 3500kg with more than 17 seats D
Is it towing over 750kg = If you need E or not.

As usual exemptions apply to confuse the issue, as well as restriction codes.

In short lengths then have a welding factory on site that has 4 welders next to each other in a container to make longer sections so it's quicker to install
