When I used to do it, when the weather turned, the truck might not get turned off for days at a time, come in fill it with jucie, quick chin wag with your counterpart, tell them where your bad bits where, where you`ve been, where cars have been left abandoned and where now covered :D and out it would go again.
A full recharge was minutes at the pump.

Apparently, and I’ll admit this is a bit counter-intuitive, the cold doesn’t affect the capacity of a lithium battery the same as it does a lead-acid battery. However, it does affect the rate that you can draw down the battery so at cold temperatures you can’t get as much maximum power. What temperatures this starts at I don’t know but probably lower than we experience.

so why do leccy cars have battery heaters fitted to their battery packs?

Explained it, Gra. It’s about how quick you can draw out of and charge the batteries. Like trace heaters on a heating oil tank, the fuel oil contains a many but’s hot or cold, makes it easier to draw out of the tank. Don’t get me wrong, cable capacity isn’t the issue as it’s better at low temps, it’s actually the speed of the chemical change inside the battery can happen. Hence the heating. A lot of this has yet to be optimised, and manufacturers are doing development with and without battery heating to see whether it warrants the expense.

it seems that the charging rate is more of an issue on a fast charger.

The Chinese seem to be using Lithium titanate batteries on their buses and lorries, not as energy dense but few of the well known 'electric vehicle problems' we hear about 🙂
