Thwaites Newage axle noise

Ever since I've had by little 2 ton dumper the front axle has made a metallic grating sound when braking down hill with a load on. I'm guessing this is the brake discs worn right down to metal? It also needs a new axle/hub seal so thinking time to strip the thing down and sort it all out. Is this a reasonably straight forward job anyone know? If not someone else can do it

My 3 ton doing the same brake pack is about £500 I think, I believe it’s an axle apart job but defer to someone like @Mick-the-fitter etc

Yep sounds like they might be very worn, if you can get a couple of big axle stands, put them on the chassis behind the axle, unbolt the axle, brake pipes, prop shaft, etc, when putting back together stand on end to allow it to go back together more easily, send photos.

£660 plus vat for the parts for a 215 axle from PES.

Another tip, before you strip anything mark both turrets to the diff casing for alignment and direction! Paint one side with one line and the other with two lines

I’ll grab the part numbers for you so you can check, off the top of my head I had a 1996 2 ton thwaites, axles were deffo newage as I remember they matched the gearbox which was a turd! Thus why I sold it and never bothered to reseal the axles!

Correct, on a flat floor and a good jack, take the wheels off
