Anyone run 1, or has run 1?
Would be used as main vehicle as well as tow vehicle

Hi, I had a discovery 4 for a couple of years. Car version, not commercial. I bought it with a snapped crank. They have an absolute list as long as your arm of common and costly faults but when they are working well they are a great car to drive and tow with. Gently driven mine would do 30mpg. Towing lost 8-10 mpg. The big benefit of having a commercial is you won’t be paying the nearly £600 road tax bill.
Absolutely great car but be prepared for some hefty maintenance bills

Yeah that's why I was thinking of the commercial, more useable than a pickup. Any idea if the 2015 / 16 versions retified any of the major issues?

Land Rover put out that they had over come the crankshaft snapping problem in the years you are talking about. I don’t believe that’s the case. If you Google sdv6 crank failure there is loads of reports of late cars suffering the same fate. I very nearly purchased a 2015 discovery commercial with snapped crank a few months back. Having done one I was ok with the job but by the time I bought a second hand engine and done all the usual brake pipes, suspension arms and gearbox oil change I was going to have to spend around £5k plus my time to get it back on the road. Not long back you could buy a Jaguar XF 3.0 diesel and put the discovery sump on it and use that but so many people have now caught on that there is no cheap Jaguar XF engines to be had any more.

I would have another in a heart beat for the driving experience but every time you drive it you’re wondering if that will be the journey that finishes the engine.

However that being said what else do you buy now? Ford Rangers have oil pump failure and chassis issues, Navara NP300 suffer timing chains, all of them have DPF issues.

I guess it’s a case of buy what you are going to really enjoying having and driving and pray you don’t fall victim to a large repair

Doesn't inspire confidence tbf, I'll do a bit more digging, the prices are high still a low mileage 16 plate is nearly 30k no way I'm paying that for a 6/7 year truck, then a higher mileage probably has more risk again

Car prices have run away. I agree I too would wince at spending £30k on a vehicle that old. I’ve been searching for 6 months for a hilux invincible auto but a decent 15 plate is around £20k. That’s too much in my opinion for something that will effectively be a second vehicle.

Who knows if prices will drop when the next round of energy prices start to hurt people. Time will tell

Yeah let's hope so, the arb forum on feckbook seems to be having an influx of trucks for sale the last few days

Trouble is good second stuff went through the roof when new was in short supply and then new went up in price later. Might be a while before there's much drop in second hand values and pickups over 5 or 6 year old unless cared for and treated underneath haven't much life left unless you put a lot of time/money onto them (certainly not if ur paying 20k)

Pickups have come down a lot in the last month. Not where it should be but definitely improving. Although this might just be down to diesel prices going up

Late 3 litre hilux's i think will still be strong money for year or two yet until there's a choice of newer 2.8s on the second hand market.

I guess I’ll stay without one then as I don’t want something that’s run in to the ground. Who is it that can afford to abuse a £20k or more asset? When did £20k become a disposable tool 😏

Yes however the 2.4 isn't to be sniffed at. Many 3.0l owners went to the new 2.4 when it came out as toyota gb were adamant they will never bring the 2.8 to the UK. Which they never did for a long while.

If I'd choice of a late 3.0 or an early 2.4, I dare say I'd go the 2.4.

True but a lot still prefer a bigger number even if its only for bragging down the pub. I couldn't drop to a 2.4 from a mapped 3.0 mind.

Only 2 seats though on the commercial, I’ve just been to Devon for 10 days with family 2 adults a 5’8 14 year old and a baby in my amorak. Can’t do that with commercial disco but now looking at Touareg etc for holidays as lado too big to be in the back lol

My amoraks on 130k miles problem free dads on 140k.

Neighbours 3.2 ranger blew engine on motorway last week with all them in, apparently that hot can’t strip anything off it exchange lads won’t touch it been quoted £7k for new engine
