The breaker is for chopping off the roots. I probably shouldn't say anymore about that.

Why on earth don't you just use a chainsaw and a cheap chain? So much less effort and quicker.

Yeah, a ripper on a micro is a great bit of kit. Really makes the most of the limited breakout. The concrete slabs I've pulled up with a micro and ripper have astounded customers. They're obviously great for all kinds of roots, and also handy for starting the trench off against a building, when you have the be 600 wide but the micro just can't provide the downforce.

Got to get roots very clean first though unless you wanna spend all day filing. I've not used one myself but know someone with a blade for stihl saw seems pretty handy from what they tell me.

I’ve got both and I reach for the chainsaw every time. It’s so much quicker and has much more reach. A good man with the saw (so no builders need apply
) can cut roots with a plunge cut and barely touch the dirt. A new chain is a fiver. Time is money.The ripper blade came into its own cleaning up rotten post retaining walls set in concrete. Can’t cut with saw without chain being f***ed in ten seconds. Can’t break out without point being stuck in ten seconds. Was the best compromise.

I like the look of that, £166 though!
I didn't bother with the chainsaw because in the past when I've hit a nail they die instantly.
Can you get more resilient chains against dirt and stones?
To be honest the sharpened up tarmac cutter on the breaker goes straight through the roots easily and seams to hold on to its edge.
The only possible issue is safety but I don't think it's worse than a chainsaw.
I'll have to put a disc on the next job and see what their like.

Ive got one of those carbide blades. They work well but as Doobin says, you cant cut very deep. Often enough to weaken the worst of the roots though

We have number 2 on the way now in September, seems to be a year for boys as everyone i know that had a baby lately has been a boy

I’ve got one for a job where we got done 12mm ply stuck in the button of a channel
We formed but it’s useless on big roots tries to melt its way through not cut.
as doob said reach for the s**t chain or the Aldi chainsaw even recip saw isn’t much fun in roots

Tbh the sds+ chisel blades fly through timber and are fine for roots though they loose there edge a little bit. I thin what's really needed is a bigger machine
