Is a tractor/trailer really more cost effective than a truck ?
't is when you don't have to play by the rules/reg.s/etc. ....
no tax/MOT/tacho/six weeklies/national O license ...
need I go on ....
oh, plus - plod and VOSA/DVSA are too complacent/frightened to bother you unless you're on your side/wedged in a building/jammed under a bridge, or the worst - just killed someone 🤬 🤬 🤬

100% this. Couldn’t believe it when I found out that all vosa checked the local suspects for was the diesel colour.
I’m not the only one eyeing up his workshop then !
I’m yet to get the perfect workshop. Grew up with my Grandad having everything to make anything (taught me to weld as a kid) but it’s all fallen apart since then. I came close at the previous place 2011-2015 with a very well organised set up, but now it’s very much a centralised stores for a bunch of plumbers. I have all the actual kit I could want .. it’s just spread around. So I can’t complain too much, and my Landlord has everything (somewhere) including an MOT garage so I can get most stuff fixed up.

It's a f****ng disgrace.

Another thing seriously pissing me off is farmers using there access to Red and going off on building sites....... I've clocked 5 so far, and yes I've seen the filter bowls.

Shouldn't be my job to rat them in and I refuse to on principle. But it's f****ng appalling that the playing field isn't refereed properly!
This has happened for as long as tractors have been around! But look at the results for the poll I put up on here afew months ago, seems half of the forum regulars use red in machines still, so no wonder it’s just common practice!

but I dare say most of those users are entitled to by the nature of the work they're carrying out .... can't say the same for a traccy/trailer set up doing muck shift from a housing development site

People will naturally justify their setup.

We've run various setups
Pickups/ defenders + trailer 12yr +
3.5t Nissan Atleon Tipper + trailer 6yr
7.5t Hookloader & trailer about 3 yr
19t Hookloader & trailer about 1yr

The more relaxed truck rules for us here mean its an easier decision, but most of the enjoyment for me has been trying to improve year on year and eventually I felt not having my own transport to move bigger kit limited our progress.

Don't hate the people dodging the chains. Hate the people putting you in them.
in this instance I totally disagree. the transport rules are there for the safety of everyone else. Those rules cost to police and maintain, which in theory all the costs of running transport legitimately should cover (MOT/O license/etc./etc.) running bent is side stepping all of that and those running straight have zero chance of competing ... the traccy haulage brigade should be hung out to dry - end of
any traccy set up caught not being used in a legitimate use should be confiscated and the user/owner/driver prosecuted - hard ..... would see an end to it if multiple exemplar were punished - properly

Trouble is it's not chains..... It's the difference between fair competition and unfair competition.

No one has refused any of these people the right to run a lorry..... They choose not to because the risk is non existent.

You'd not support Smackhead Steve nicking tools out of someone's work van, nor would you support your local drug dealer...... Both of those activities are illegal too.

As for tractors always being used etc.... Yes, but it's only the past 20 years or so that it seems to of become legitimate and common.....

Here’s a thought - all road going farm machinery/ trailer & construction plant should have a MOT!! It made absolutely no sense why my 3cx didn’t require a MOT , I did more road miles annually in it than my pickup!!

A few firms run tractor/trailer here too, despite truck being an easier option, see them hauling stone miles in 300hp fendts - I keep digging and get quarry bringing it in if its bigger job, doesn't make sense to me but must make some sort of sense to them.

I dunno, I've got a few ton of steel going to Lawrencekirk tomorrow it's gonna be a 4 hour round trip in the truck but if we relied on a traccy and trailer it'd be 8/10 hours and I'd be crippled by the end of it. Plus probably cheaper to buy a lorry than an equivalent tracor trailer setup.
We’re talking local jobs and not 4 hour trips!

DVSA..... And whilst there attitude is appalling, its not like they are breaking the law or undercutting others.

R.E annual testing, the issue would be that A) under PUWER plant should be roadworthy if used on the road and it shouldn't require a test to ensure it.
B) there wouldn't actually be a sensible way of brake testing or roadworthy testing off road vehicles..... It's actually one of the reasons we haven't seen it catch up with agricultural equipment yet.

It's only bent because some ***** in Westminster say it's bent and you're only straight if you jump through their hoops and pay them. Don't be the crab pulling the others back into the bucket.

but there are rules in place governing what can be done with / by the traccy brigade ...
e.g. get stopped with a load of muck in a dump - " where have you come from? - where are you taking it ? " ..
follow them and see if they are lying and nick them, seize the offending set up, then visit the site they claim to have come from, who by now are wondering WTF the cowboy in the traccy has got to :giggle: ... as an example

example two - digger on plant trailer same Q.s if the use/journey is not legit (ag./forestry - and can be proven) ... seize the lot - permanently

People have been refused the right to run a lorry. Or at least threatened with the amount they'll be fined or the time they'll be imprisoned if they do - "chains." The right to do something with permission (driving licence etc) isn't really a right. It's what's called positive liberty, an actively granted right to something and not true liberty. Negative liberty, the absence of constraint, is liberty.

I'm anti theft because it has a victim. I'm pro free trade because it doesn't.
