It’s embarrassing getting off the ferry/Chunnel when returning to the UK and realising what a run-down-litter-filled-shithole the UK has become.
I remember going to France as a kid and thinking it was a dirty place compared to the UK. Dogshit and fag butts everywhere. Incredible how the tables have turned!

Up in the northwest - quiet rural countryside and the coastine that surrounds brittany is something else.
Don't like to criticise too much as an expat and France has got more than its share of problems but I was back in u.k in August last year and was genuinely shocked with some of the roads, not sure id want to be on the roadbike over there nowadays .....potholes that could have you in the scenery.

We stayed one night in Caen. The scenery was lovely but I was genuinely impressed with the quality of the roads and of the cleanliness. It appears there is genuine pride in taking care of the countryside. No obvious litter at the sides of the carriageway etc. I wasn’t so impressed by Calais but I’m sure that has significant problems. Overall I was surprised how superior to England it appeared to be in those respects. I’m not very well travelled but I really enjoyed a brief visit to France

have done many thousands of miles around France and love the place --- second only to Germany for clean and tidy ... before the Gaucher's reared its head, I had planned to retire to France

I wonder if it's a pride or whether it's that everyone is more realistic. In other European countries it seems more socially acceptable to do the jobs. Coupled with people being level headed and not needing 500 signs before roadworks adding to the cost of work

20+ years since I was last in Paris and they'd fooked it up making everything one way ... had to drive miles if you went wrong, instead of just doing a U-ey .. (was on the Kawi) .. always liked Paris though, apart from the peripherique at rush hour ... used to camp in a campsite municipal in the Bois de Bologne, just round the corner from the Palais de Versaille - literally -- and a straight run down into the centre of Paris

I did notice some road repairs on dual carriageways being carried out with only a couple of vans with flashing lights warning of the workers presence. That would never happen here. However the roads and I assume the country are not as densely populated as here.

How il be spending my bank holiday weekend, fencing off the new gaff. Glad i hired the auger!

Extremely frustrating news on the planning front, recent application refused on the basis that the principal planning officer doesn’t like the design.. a design which is literally the same shape and size as the existing building , same materials, just added windows and doors to make it habitable! Use class change is already approved, so no arguments there. Our consultant spoke with the planners last week and they had no objections then, so why now? Planning is such a huge money & time drain!! They seem to have zero accountability these days

planning officers are there to advise, unless it's a delegated decision, not go against an entire committee ... ultimately it's the committee's decision...not his ... sounds like you might have pee-ed someone off

Over the years of dealing with various local authorities planning departments I have learned a lot!!
Each Authority will have different rules on delegated decisions. This is a game that you have to play depending on if you are applying or objecting to a planning App.
But the one thing I have learned is never to trust anyone else to deal with the planners on your behalf. They don’t always hear what they are being told!! And planners are only giving an opinion when you engage with them. That opinion is only one comment from another department from changing. So trust them even less than your own agent

Its been a very wet day! Not loving life atm!

was packing Dan's drill parcel yesterday afternoon, on me bench, when the first few spots landed and by the time I'd decamped to a box, it was biblical ... only thing missing was the frogs .... 5 seconds out in it would've had you soaked to the skin ... persisted like that for a good 30 minutes ... within 10 minutes the sun'd come out and dried the bench off completely -- unreal .....
kicked off again 'bout 8pm and has hammered it down since
