Personally I can't stand it. It typifies the consumer mindset of people who buy newbuilds. You know- there's always a pair of leased cars out front (RangeRover Sport in white for her, BMW for him), the fences are all painted grey, they think their newbuild shitbox is posh and exclusive cuz they have a brick wall down one part of the garden and were stupid enough to pay £450k for a house built from plasterboard with chipboard joists. I hope the site plumber took some care and attention doing those pushfit joints above that lot... Fat chanceWhats your thoughts on it ?
's way it is at 65 Jack ..... spirit is usually willing, but the body just doesn't keep up .... so much I find harder now than I did 5 years agoView attachment 41889View attachment 41890View attachment 41891Then every now and then I’m on new builds doing plot workssupposed to be starting on a site Monday subbying got 25 plots for internal drainage and block & beam floors then doing the paths and drives then fencing and turfing

Personally think there's a lot of value in someone like that. Life experience. Ability to pace themselves and think about what they're doing's way it is at 65 Jack ..... spirit is usually willing, but the body just doesn't keep up .... so much I find harder now than I did 5 years ago... at least he's a reliable pair of hands

Think Doobins still undecided?Personally I can't stand it. It typifies the consumer mindset of people who buy newbuilds. Not content with paving over half the garden, they then go and slap down plastic grass on the other half to finish making it totally sterile. Only they're too stupid to see that it's quite the opposite. Because instead of natural organisms breaking down the piss from their £2000 lockdown puppy, it now just soaks through the 'grass' and stinks forever more. And despite what YummyMummy spends on 'kills 99.9% of all known germs' cleaning products for the granite countertops inside, outside this is negated by Junior crawling around outside in dogshit slurry left behind in the weave of the plastic after they've bagged the sloppy turd (and then sprayed the hose over it to 'clean'/liquify it some more). You can't ever get it properly clean. Nature does this for you with real grass.
Lot of generalisations in there but pretty accurate in my Southern experience. Just for laughs, I'm a member of 'DON'T buy a Persimmon home' on Facebook. It's unreal- both the problems people are having that Persimmon just won't sort, and the prices people paid!
1780's cottage with a view for me- it might be tiny and on the main road but it's got character, I can heat it for naff all with the logburner and I don't have to deal with the sort of people who buy newbuilds.
We might not always agree on our views……but boy do you have me nodding on this one!!Personally I can't stand it. It typifies the consumer mindset of people who buy newbuilds. You missed off the permantly attired in gym wear bit...and the weird lips thing ...we've got some of these specimens appeared on the new estates.all very odd. Im Missing my old boy Graham although he’s just come back from Spain a done a week on machine as he was bored hahaand to be one step ahead ... trying to be an 'extension' of who you're working with.
Think Alex had a surprise when I was with him in '17 ... tried to always be where he wanted me and be ahead on every thing we were doing ... soon upped my rate anyway, fair play to him .... wasn't just another braindead labourer who just wasn't interested in anything other than the money.
Russ is always keen to have me, especially on the trickier stuff ... just has to sit and operate, instead of hanging / getting out the cab every five minutes, trying to get it right
and that comes with, as said, life experience, the ability to think about the task in hand and be able to communicate. There is a lot to be said for most 'older' people on a job ... we can bring a lot to the party... i know @Giles will agree
My dads fully retired now too, my Mrs was always shocked at how we never really needed to talk about the job in hand, we both just mind read each other and know what each other was doing next, utterly priceless!!Im Missing my old boy Graham although he’s just come back from Spain a done a week on machine as he was bored haha
Nothing he hadn’t done before or encountered steady plodding away 6 hrs of work a day but better than the 21 and 38 year old who I had to replace him with combined.

Graham sums it up above
Best xtra pair of hands I ever had was my old man ....when we moved to France he spent a few years grafting with me to help me get going....... was in his mid sixties , so often it was that I turned round to ask and he either had what I wanted in his hand already , or was walking away from me to get it, I can still see him wandering off for it
It takes some real concentration to be like that ...can't just loaf along reacting to what's asked.

and that's exactly what I meant .... might not be as quick or be as able to slog hard all day, but work smart not hard ... and as all have said, at least one step ahead .... " .... utterly priceless!! "My old boss, now retired, does a day or two here and there for me to earn a bit of pocket money. Wish I could clone him as you just don’t get people with his knowledge, skill and work ethic anymore. He’d freely admit not as fast as he was but that doesn’t matter as it’s quality not quantity.
My old boy isn’t my dad, Graham worked for my dad for 30 years before doing 14 years for me. He’s like an uncle, my dads 76 and about to start 4 houses despite having heart attack this year, falling down a set of stairs in a refurb and breaking 2 ribs puncturing a lung and he’s just had rotator cuff surgery to fix him breaking it in that fall. (He’d stripped all the floors but not ply ‘d them missed the joist and went all way down) didn’t go to hospital till he’d turned up at home and mum and I made him.My dads fully retired now too, my Mrs was always shocked at how we never really needed to talk about the job in hand, we both just mind read each other and know what each other was doing next, utterly priceless!!
To be fair that's my yearly MO tbhBut becoming more a liability apparently he’s lost the pecker off the 1.5 ton put it on his ranger and when he got to job tailgate was down and he’d either acceleroated and hammer not strapped down shot back knocked tailgate open and he’d left it on rd
