Question- I don't do footings and the like- if there's a little square like some you have marked out do you try and leave the little island or just dig the whole square out- would have thought the island would just collapse

The chalk in the second photo was so bloody hard an 8t machine wouldn't pull the footings in one go had to take the centre out with a 400mm bucket and widen to 700mm ( only time I've ever encountered chalk) everything round here is clay like the first photo. We don't get stones. Most the machines where I work don't even a toothed bucket for them. I dug a hole out for a septic tank the other day with a ditching bucket as it was bigger than the bulk digging bucket on a hire machine.

All depends on ground, usually they just fall in them marks are centre dig, so as you can imagine buy time you dig it there is much left

You can always guarantee there is a big rock somewhere near where you want to keep a ‘island’ intact

Come to the home counties. We don't have rocks !!

The concrete in that first pic is 1.5m deep and I only broke one corner on the whole site. I did some in Milton Keynes. 3m deep dug with a 3tonner (just) and came out perfectly

For a wee twist this one had a redundant manhole in the corner, held 3 loads of concrete

With the cost of concrete atm, keeping those islands in can be quite profitable - no matter how much of a pain they are!

Fair bit of chalk here, didn't seem to bother the mighty 3cx too much.
It did grunt a bit at being asked to pick and carry the 1.8m rings at nearly 1400kgs each - had to put something in the front bucket to keep the wheels on the ground
Loving the joysticks, no idea why you lot love the old sticks so much. Ill take the banter on being a learner for the ability to swivel the seat to face the direction you're digging and having the extradig on the roller is a joy.

It’s a liquid cement based grout/pointing product, pour it on then move it into joints then wash excess away will be great on setts and crazy paving.

and the point of the railings is ??????? ... look a tad out of place amongst all the other nicely crafted features
