The bomag saga.....rebuilding steering box

Hi all,

As per my last post, my newly acquired bomag bw 100ad 2 roller has now sprung a leak out the top of the steering column, underneath the steering wheel.

I've got the box and column stripped off and a complete seal kit here.

Just thought I'd drop a quick post to see if anyone's done one before and if there's any dos and don't before I start swearing at it.

I can’t help you with the seals but if you need any help swearing d hesitate to give me a shout.

DO NOT, I Repeat DO NOT f**k around with a orbital steering pump unless you know what your doing Richard...... The Inventor of them lost the plot which should tell you all you need to know. Put it back together wrong and it will look and act fine until you go to try it wherein it will become a motor and almost certainly break your wrist!

Probably the orbital bearings have got movement in them and caused the top seal to leak causing oil to rise up the steering column, if you are very lucky it may just be the seal but even the it could be the shaft is worn!

So the 160 quid seal kit can go back and the 88quid replacement I found in Poland last nite will be ordered.

deffo .... most of those orbitals are fairly generic anyway .. a lot of the time it's shaft size/splines/end fittings that determine the model .. who makes it .. not a lot of choice in manufacturer .. can be picked up s/h for around the figure you quote on Fleabay - it's just getting the right shaft fitting
