Telehandler won’t go into 4th gear

A quick one before I start mucking around with it but my new telehandler(533-105) wont go into 4th gear, 9mph on the road is very boring 🙄
My first assumption is that the previous owner has disconnected it somewhere to limit site travel speed, any ideas where to look? When you twist the stick it stays in 3Rd on the dash.

I’ve checked that there isn’t a ‘4th gear fuse’..

Any ideas? Cheers

Normally I've found it's a solenoid on the transmission not working properly

do it as well as you can,but learn to do it better
Nope, just up to 3rd.
presumably (as i have no experience of these), it's a shuttle for fwd/rev and you select 1, 2, 3, 4 on a twist selector switch? ..... with no 4th in fwd, I'd not expect it in reverse either .... as said .. prob.s been blanked out to prevent its use.
could well be done at the selector switch or the solenoid ....... or anywhere in between :(
have a suss at the switch first to see if you have a live supply exiting, in the 4th gear position? If you do, it's further down the line/circuit ... if not, suspect the switch has been doctored

IIRC the telehandler and 4CX share some similarities in the powertrain and steering. We restrict the speed of the 4CX when it's in joystick (reverse) steering mode by playing about with the solenoids, amongst other things. On a 4 speed powershift I believe it's the 'Y' solenoid that controls/enables 4th gear in both forward and reverse. The 'Y' solenoid is the middle one on the bottom bank. Try that.

I’d give the JCB dealer a ring first with the serial no. and see if it was done at the factory first, (Cheetham Hill were known for having 3rd gear taken out of there D6’s from the factory) then just give Morris Lesley (that’s who it belonged to first?) a ring and ask them if they did anything to it to restrict the speed? A phone call won’t hurt to ask🙂.

Good idea Ollie, just rung the dealer who supplied it and they said they sometimes restrict them for certain sites, but said it’s a laptop job! Just got it into my workshop so will check the middle solenoid and if that’s all good call the local dealer to nip out and plug her in 👍🏼

A thought - do these machines have a sensor(can’t see anything switch wise) but within the hydraulics that knows when the legs are down which allows more weight to be lifted?
Because from my unscientific tests it appears that legs down makes no difference in how far out I can send weight oppose to legs up? Or is it merely to level you up and stop topple over. The lockout on these is a pain, Only allows retraction not lowering when it’s ‘overweight’ fine I guess if your lifting at height but when horizontal it doesn’t really help! I guess it’s idiot proof 🤪

I am not familiar with the jcb handlers but I believe the sensor that controls the lock out is on the rear axle & senses when it is getting to light on the ass.
Also sure I either read on here or cef that the problem with making something idiot proof is that someone then makes a bigger idiot ie drivers start relying on technology saving them rather than common sense.
