Spray welding with mig

I had a go at turning the MIG welder up and spraying some wire last night it seemed to penetrate far better and pour weld down well but every time I stopped the wire would burn back and stick to the tip any ideas where I was going wrong?

Do you have burn back control? It will keep the wire feeding for a few seconds after you let the trigger off

No I don't think so but I don't know what either of the top two knobs do

top one could well be burn back control ... or a timer control for the next one down which is continuous / hit-miss / and spot .... if you can't alter the burn back (enough), pulling the torch away as you stop, will help ... spray will give you great results, if you have the juice (y):giggle:

You may be naturally holding a too tight and arc? I think you need a little more stick out for spray than you ordinarily would? But I’m no expert by a long shot.

you might find burn back control actually on the control board, I’ve seen welders before with adjustable potentiometers on the board, just for tweaking certain settings with a screwdriver. But not much help if you want to change it regularly.

Thanks It seemed to pour in well much faster than stick and no slag to deal with the second attempt went better than the first 😝

I'll have another go with more stickout next time.

I'll have a twiddle of the top knob and see if it makes any diffrence

TBH, it looks more likely to be a timer ..... set the lower switch to spot ". . . . ." and try varying the knob .. should vary the burn to give larger/smaller spot welds .... set it to stitch/hit & miss ... and should again vary the burn time for differing weld lengths

Burn back may be inside the machine by the wire feeder, thats where it is on my welder and a couple of others I've seen, for whatever reason.
