Should I replace my Track Motor or get it repaired?

Hello,

The left nearside Hydraulic Track Motor on my machine sprung a leak the other day, and my machine is out of action.

The problem appears to be with the gasket.

I have managed to get the motor out, but it took two of us, and we had to practically dismantle the machine to get the track off!!

The motor was made in 2019, so it is out of warranty.

I can get a brand-new M+S motor with a 2-year warranty for £428, which is not too bad.

Or I could attempt to get the motor repaired.

Getting the motor repaired might be cheaper, but it would only come with a 12-month warranty.

The problem is that I don't want to go through the pain of replacing it again.

I was thinking I could keep the broken motor and have it repaired at a later date, and use it as a spare in case the other one goes.

What do you think?

Thanks

Think your best of just doing an exchange with a refurbed one from the likes of the final drive center...

How bad was it leaking!? My tb125 started seeping a bit back in 2021. I've since put another 2500hrs on it and it's still only seeping and tracks true and strong🤣

Just reread. What machine is it. Pretty bad that it's leaking already if it's a 2019 model ...

I know that is what the Hydraulic Engineer said. But the MFR will not warrant the part because they only provide 2 years.

It's an M+S.

A new like for like motor is about £430 with a 2 year warranty.

There is probably nothing wrong with the motor. It's the gasket that is gone and it is peeing out fluid and losing power to the track.

What is the turn around time to get your motor rebuilt?

I assume it's one of these.....

In which case I recommend you either learn to reseal hydraulic motors yourself or you get rid of the machine as you'll be doing this often.

Well if that's what it is or it looks anything like this I think he's done well getting it to last 7 minutes let alone 7 years!

I also wouldn't bother ringing Final drive center. I suspect they may quietly put the phone down when they see the pic above .
If you can get the new motor for £500 I would just do that- and take your chances again.

FDC will be a waste of there time.

The seals are most likely blowing because the "track motor" is a bogstandard hydraulic motor that's screaming it's bollox off when it's working and is susceptible to all the dirt and s**t ingress your going to give it trundling about in mud and soil.

If you know who sold you it, I suggest spending the money it would cost to repair on having them kneecapped. It would be a better investment than the digger I'm afraid.

I have not enquired about that yet.
But a new motor is 2 -3 day and a replica around 2 - 3 weeks.

I'm just tempted to buy a new one with the 2-year warranty because what am I saving if a rebuild takes 2 weeks and then it only comes with a 12-month warranty for £150 less.

At least it will have 2 years guarantee on it.
That's 2 years of peace of mind, and I would not care if it went after that because I would have made the money back on the machine.
