Which length gives an acceptable angle for loading a Transit size vehicle? Have a feeling 3m will be too short, is 4.5m OK? Anyone got experience here?

Excavated soil. Guessing that as it should drop it in a nice pile I can get away with dropping a side as it loads.

I have the 4.5m Shifta Conveyor and I wouldn't want to go shorter. The advantage with a longer conveyor is that you can put the soil in the middle of your tray/dumper etc instead of one side, and pile it higher which minimises any manual spreading of the load when it's getting full.
You also should be able to leave the sides up to contain the load better as well.
With soil you also should be able to run the conveyor at quite a steep angle. If you have material that is rounder like some rocks or broken concrete, the angle may have to be less steep as the material may roll back down the conveyor if it's too steep.

I have seen people using the short ones in pairs (or more) would that be an option?

Don't complain - suggest what's better
I would second this. Longer is better. Gives you more flexibility on placing the soil on the bed.

i have a couple of 4,5m and a 3m ,4.5m are the boys loading dumpers or transits.too steep an angle and the belt will not take much to stop
