Okay:
The Volvo shown above also looks good… someone suggested a tractor and that also could be good also but (in my completely uneducated opinion) I wonder how resilient it would be in terms of being able to shrug off smashing into cars at speed for all that time? The TS looks like it could absorb those all day long?
So, follow-up questions (thank you all again in advance):
1. Someone also suggested hooking up a snowplough to the TS. This, I think, would be the ideal scenario (although no-one said anything about whether it could cross roadside ditches and smash through barriers, I guess it can, right?) but the question I have is how hard is that to do? Does it have a native bracket for that or would it have to be welded? One of the characters is a mid-level army guy and another is a bit of a geezer so between them it’s not crazy that they’d know how to do that. But would a snow plow be around on a building site in September? Probably not, but if the TS can move in and out of fields easily (over ditches and punching through roadside barriers, if it can do that) then maybe the snowplow wouldn’t be needed.
2. An excellent point about these vehicles only having one driver. The TS looks big enough for people to ride on top, or perhaps in the middle hopper section (along with their all-important cargo) ? They’d have to pad it out with some mattresses to cover the bumpy ride but they could salvage those from the empty houses that now litter the country. The others can ride motorbikes in the TS’ wake.
3. Presumably a straight up ‘dozer like the Volvo above is driven the same as a regular car, but could someone with no TS driving experience drive one pretty easily (I imagine it’d be a lot easier when you don’t have to worry about other drivers)?

No, they won’t, but one character could simply say ‘what about that scraper?’ They used to work on a building site in the past. They point to it, then I can describe it, job done!

It's not a piece of earthmoving equipment, but in the case of the scenario you describe obviously a tank would be the go. Just drive over everything at high speed
Better suspension and speed than earthmoving equipment, armour plated, and a bit of weaponry just in case...

Personally I think a Volvo A30C would be the one.
Everyone knows what a dump truck is roughly..... They are likely to be found on a building site (scrapers not quite so much)
There pretty resilient..... And let's be honest if your talking life or death your not going to drive into things for the fun of it....
Other thing is these items tend to come in pairs or more..... Let's be honest if it's life or death and there's a pack of you your not going to go.... I know let's take this one singular item, opens you plot up for breakdowns, getting stuck and other things...... You could add some jeopardy and difficulty in having to transfer the load (which I'm assuming is many crates of buckfast wine) part way when one catastrophically fails.... Or perhaps needing to swap bits across (a tyre or axle perhaps).
Scrapers are pretty rare. In fairness the largest units in the UK are owned by the Kerr's who are in central Scotland..... But there ot something you would be likely to just find.
I'd say you do need to account for how quickly your cataclysm happens..... Quick is unlikely to little the highway with traffic jams..... Namely as people will either die before fleeing or crash to the side..... Slow means there's unlikely to be much traffic.... A few trying to find there way home but ultimately you'd probably find arterial roads blocked in those scenarios.....

A great response, thank you. Looking at the exposed front grille in that pic though I can’t see that withstanding thousands of heavy impacts? Obviously I bow to your more knowledgeable judgement.
A scraper could be found though. As long as it’s not something you never see, then rare is fine. Luck is allowed in fiction; insane luck not so much. Good point about the spares, I’ll use that. And the cataclysm is instant, incidentally. Everybody is there one minute and then—quite literally—poof, they’re gone.
Makes Friday afternoon on the M6 look like a speedway.
