What triggers this. I can't remember growing up anyone doing it but that maybe due to lack of media.
I often wonder if it's down to the chemicals in our food etc
Life, business, relationships, finances, hurt.... And many others.

Until recently it would of been a taboo to die from suicide to the point many would rather not say anything, fortunately those days are gone. I don't think it's more common, just more public

Do we know for sure that's what happened? I know its the biggest killer of men in our age bracket but there's lots of other ways we loose people too.

sadly lost three friends in late teens/early twenties that did ... :(

without doubt, IMHDO, so called 'social' media will almost certainly have a big influence on ppls self image, etc.
Vicki's hubby has lost five friends this year, two in the last 8 weeks  - none of them yet 40:(

Life / peer pressures are far greater these days, I think, plus all the other stresses everyone experiences to some degree or another.
combine it all with far less personal interactions growing up (too much screen time - not enough direct interaction), it doesn't help when you need 'yer mates around you' type of thing. A lot more introversion than there ever was

That's what I have been told by someone I consider reliable. I'd love it to be otherwise but that's my understanding.
ditto -- had it confirmed by two mutual friends whom I trust to know exactly.

I wondered if there was a recent increase due to modern society, but no, rates have been up and down for the last hundred years, but generally declining since highs during The Great Depression of the 30s.
There are about 5700 suicides PA so definitely nowhere near the biggest killer overall, but it is the largest for males under 50yrs old.
Dementia is the biggest overall at 75k, mainly because we're living longer.

That was my first thought as well , trying to be positive

I had my eyes opened last year to some of the stuff that's available online about the topic ...aimed at assisting kids and teenagers thinking about it. Unbelievable.

Sadly it’s always been a thing. My mothers family friend walked out to the garden shed in 70s and never came back, no warning and blindsided his wife. I can off hand think of at least 4 farm related suicides around our rural area within a 5 mile radius of where I was growing up in the 90s, One of my classmates offed herself at 16.
All well before social media existed.
Leaves an inedible mark on those that are left to pick up the pieces.
I believe we are the only species that does this.

On a personal note, having witnessed first hand the effect that extreme vascular dementia and Alzheimer’s has on a person and their family …. (Father in law) .. I’d prefer taking a one way walk out to the garden shed anytime..

Bloody shocked to read this . I’ve not had any interaction with Ollie more recently but when I bought my Komatsu I wasn’t very familiar with them. 2 people who helped me at the time was Aiden @CPS and Ollie . Aiden kindly looked at one for me that was for sale in Ni but I decided to let that one go and I met with Ollie to have a look at the one I eventually bought . He’d actually driven it a few times for the co that had owned it from new . He was a really nice guy and couldn’t have been more helpful . Even after I’d bought it he was regularly on the phone for a chat to see how I was getting on with it.
RIP

I followed his posts in the past think it was in the old place rip. Just to add what has been said above media does play a big part but not in a deliberate way I don't think. Good news isn't interesting just bad news people consume. I read one time there is some Asian island somewhere that has some crazy suicide rate. It basically starts off with 1 orv2 doing it then gets picked up by news, word of mouth, media etc. All of a sudden the phenomenon is normalised and anyone who might previously not have followed through does it. Perhaps all the talking about it and helping actually makes it worse? Be interesting to see numbers before after with stiff upper lip versus mental health awareness. Anyway I'm no expert. Sorry to detract from the thread as I said above RIP
