Stalin signed a non-aggression pact which is not the same as "on the same side".
While the pact did define how eastern europe would be cut up between them, there was no agreement either would support the other militarily.

There was an agreement for military aid, not necessarily fighting side by side, Germany was getting materials in return for a cruiser and aircraft among other things.
