would love to see the RAMS for that :oops:.... ... "we confidently predict the weight of said lump of tree will be ... " :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:
hated tree work with a crane ... ****ers were always well shy/lying through their teeth, on their guesstimates ... and i always tried to be well over cap. at reach .. you can't put the bloody thing down once it's been lopped off, to have a re-rig :(:( .. have had a few seat foam moments, working with tree monkeys
We do quite a bit of tree work with cranes - the lift plan always works on 50% SWL max. Start small and work up to get a sense of timber weight - can make surprisingly accurate ‘guesstimates’. Having a good crane driver makes a world of difference - it’s important that they don’t overtighten before cutting because they are shitting themselves - that’s when things go bang!

absolutely ..... 's why an accurate figure is needed, so you take the right amount of tension .... too little and it heads downwards, 'kin quickly; too little and it heads skywards, just as quickly .... either way is a seat foam moment as cranes do not like shock loading .... tends to pull 'em over :oops:

Off topic slightly, but did you see the latest top gear stunt with crane over a huge dam and bungee a car over the end? Talk about shock loading!!

And he was short rigged! I saw that episode and having done the Appointed Persons course some years ago - I certainly wouldn't have wanted my name on the lift plan!

Regardless of all the calcs, I wouldn’t be sat in the crane when the car went off, bugger that!

totally, utterly agree with all the above guys ..... short rigged, flat boom, shock load, although the load would have built up gradually, to whatever that would've weighed at the terminal velocity at the distance it travelled .. vertically  ... sod signing off on those calcs ....... sooooooooooooooooo many variables ...... as for being in either seat ... **** that for a game of soldiers ..... not enough bucks in the world to get me in either seat

I got the impression that the dam would never have allowed it to happen if they were not 500% sure that the calcs were spot on and good. The risk to life if the crane toppled and cracked the dam!

is it just the jcb telehander we have or are they all like a skip with box section thrown at it ?

Absolutely no finesse on the controls, cant boom out and raise/lower unless revving the guts out of it, no fine control. and its 3 years old.

I do appreciate the free bootwasher in the cab every time it rains.

Hateful lump of rusting crap.

My mate has an 02 cat and the boom in out is on a switch with raise lower on the joystick. He can't seem to do both at the same time but perhaps its just him. The switch seems crap though no proportional (if right word) control just in or out
