I need a laser and reciever for general site set out and basic groundworks. There seems to be some relatively cheap stuff out there (Vevor kit) going up to to more expensive stuff. It's just for my own personal use as I develop my small holding, doesn't need machine mount capability and won't be used day in day out. Are the cheap kits reasonably accurate or are they garbage and I should be looking at Spectra or similar?

The Fukuda FRE-205 is fully self-levelling, has an accuracy of ±3mm @ 30m, rechargeable, horizontal only laser level with a range of 500m diameter. It also has the ability to set slopes and gradients in both the X & Y axis and a 3-year warranty.
It is mainly aimed at the general ground worker but also includes a small cross line laser for internal applications. This can also be removed from the kit.
There are other models in the Fukuda range which add to the mix the ability to do verticals and squaring at 90deg but obviously the more you as a product to do - the higher the price.
Spectra is a fantastic heavy duty premium brand and competes directly against the other premium brands, Leica and Topcon. In general terms, Spectra tend to be tougher, more durable, have higher IP ratings and a longer warranty. You wouldn't be disappointed if you had a Spectra laser but it may be overkill for your usage and obviously more expensive.
In terms of general advice....
Stick to a red beam rotary for outdoor use. Don't be misled into purchasing a green beam rotary for outside use. There are lots of instances that green beam is better, but for a smallholding, you should be using red.
Although we don't sell Vevor lasers we come across them from time to time and they are referenced by customers. They appear a lot on eBay and Amazon. On paper, they would appear to do everything you need a laser to do but this comes with some caveats.
I have heard of customer purchasing these types of lasers (not specifically from Vevor, but at this general price point) and have received a wonderful kit which they couldn't be happier with. Did everything they needed and didn't miss a beat.
I have also heard of customers receiving kits that didn't operate correctly or at all, had questionable accuracy and almost zero backup and support should it go wrong.
I think it's sometimes forgotten that unlike buying any other tools (e.g. a hammer) laser levels are precision levelling devices. They need to arrive calibrated and fully operational. Customers typically need technical support and guidance, access to servicing and calibration and a robust warranty.
I think it's fair to say that for "trade use" this type of laser would not be considered but as you are not making your living from using this equipment then it is less clear cut and then comes down to a personal choice.
