Rotary Laser Level - Where to start?

Morning all,

Been looking at various laser levels, trying to compare them and work out which would be best for my needs. But can’t make mind up.

Ive been looking at Leica Rugby 600 and 800 series. That’s about the money I want to spend in all honesty and used the Leica before which is what draws me to it.

I’ve come across Topcon and couple other brands, are they any good?

Any suggestions and advice is welcomed!

Quality dual grade at sensible money - my mate recently replaced his Leica with one and I have a Leica 410dg that has a tiny crack in the top that is going to be put aside as a spare and Ill prob buy the same - (drawback would be only 5% grades)
Can be found for £1250 + vat (5 year guarantee)

EDIT: Like Rory says Laser Levels online worth a look too - Mark offered me Spectra GL622N (upto 25% grade ) and Fukuda FRE-203XT (upto 10% grade)

Literally just bought a spectra ll300s, hl760 receiver and cr700 receiver start of this week.

Seems decent enough the cr700 is decent although bit of a pain to setup resulting in multiple efforts to raise or lower the laser to get a suitable height to hit the receiver. Mostly due to the dipper on the u48 not having any decent clear sections to move the receiver up and down

Plus the hl760 and cr700 can be paired together so you can use one as a display in the cab although not tried this yet as can't quite read the numbers on the cr700 from my seat. Although when paired I'm sure which ever one is set as the display will only be a display rather than detect separately

I just bought the ll300n with remote and the cr700.
I've found the same with it being difficult to set up. I've not tried the grade thing yet and after watching YouTube I think my Lazer could only be singly grade? I've not spoken the Lazer levels online or read the instructions yet so not sure on that.

I was thinking about making a plate to bolt to the dipper to make setting up easier.
Not tried it on my dx10 yet, how is your bobcat paint coping with the magnets.
The more expensive machine mount ones have a pole that attaches and can slide up and down think might do something similar

Do they not do a bar which you can mount to the arm which clears the pipes etc and gives you more scope for mounting the receiver in the right place?

The next one up has this sort of setup but is nearly three times the cost although has better features

Bucket post is the best solution (I'm gonna make one at some point) for mounting receiver. Dipper mounted is OK but you only get an accurate reading with dipper in one exact place.

We recently bought the Fluke HLS spinner kit.
Really nice bi of kit not cheap but I swear by fluke and not disappointed!
Also worked fine with spectra dipper mounted receiver another lad had.

I've not noticed it mess the paint up but then my E10 always sleeps indoors.

I've said it on other threads like this but make sure you get the best receiver with digital readout
I would rather work with the most basic laser going and a digital readout receiver than a top spec laser and standard receiver
They are such a time saver

My old ones were just up or down no frills, fine for me to use but a pain if someone else is on the staff as they can't gauge what sort of depth is to go.
The digital read out ones are worth every penny

On top of the ease in that way you can set the falls on pipe without adjusting anything
Or have a staff with a pad of plywood on the bottom to float around a concrete pad as you work

Hi Guys,

Sorry a bit late to the party on this one...

@rossandson we always ask customers "If you had a laser now - what would you be doing with it?" with this information I can then advise narrow it down to a few options.

In addition to this:

All Rotary lasers level on the horizontal, but do you need it to do verticals and squaring (90deg)?

Do you need it to be able to set slopes and gradients and if yes, do you want to be able to key in a percentage (e.g 2% fall in the x axis & a 3.9% fall in the Y axis) and it then tilts over to the exact gradient in which case you need a true grade laser or do you simply want what is called a grade facility laser which is cheaper and you then manually tilt the head and manually calculate the gradient?

In the world of Lasers, the main premium brands are Leica, Spectra & Topcon. It's a bit like the car industry with Audi versus BMW versus Mercedes. So realistically you wouldn't be disappointed with any of them. But each has plusses and minuses. We are Spectra dealers and don't sell the other two brands but we also sell a very good mid-range brand called Fukuda which offers a lot of value for money.

So yes, the are lots of options available but if you can let us know your requirements I can advise a few options.

Hope this helps.

Hi Russell,

If you have an LL300N with RC601 then the laser is definitely dual grade.

A good guide to setting slopes and gradients can be seen here:

https://www.laser-level.co.uk/pdfs/How to set Slopes (Falls,Grades) 7.9.20.pdf

If you are still struggling, call the Technical team on 08000 869 769 (option 3) and ensure you have the laser, detector and remote with you. Somebody from Technical can then talk it through with you.

Please note we are extremely busy at the moment and so someone will ring you back if they are not able to go through this with you when you first call.

Best regards

Hi Brendan,

Typically, you would only read the mm/inch display on the CR700 when mounted on a measuring staff. When mounted on the plant using the magnet pack you would only really be using the cluster of super bright LED's to show too high, too low and level / on-grade.
Best regards

I’ve got the topcon hl5 and the good reciever that reads out in mm great for general Groundworks paving foundations etc

I’ve a boom mounted receiver but don’t use it, I check levels and can carry level through even on 20mx40m menages etc to within 100mm and if you shy on high side can then trim up.

if your cutting precise pads all day every day can see the appeal for machine control
Like I dig etc.

never really felt the need for dual grade tried altering mine for slope for drainage but in the end was easier to do it in head
