Recommendations for 6-8T excavators for personal use and hire

Hi,
I’m looking to buymy first machine to do a lot of work on my farm and also to hire out to help pay the finance. It will be needed for ditching, tree shearing, drainage, groundwork’s etc. My budget is around £30k for a used machine hopefully with no more than 3500hours. I’ve been told a lot of 6T machines have the same power as the 8t machines but obviously less reach and weight. What would everyone recommend?

TB175 Takeuchi. Best choice you will make and probably pick a tidy one up for under 20k meaning you can avoid renting it out to idiots for £400 per week

I been operating this off and on for the last year. 5.5t i think, but uses 3cx buckets. It must have done 20k + hrs. Uses a fair bit of oil and its had plenty of abuse. But it still always does what you want it to do without any

drama. I would recommend

Thanks for your replies. I understand the idea behind paying a little less for something and then wouldn’t have to hire out to help pay the finance but I actually quite like the idea of going down the plant hire route and perhaps getting more machines in the future. Hence why I’m prepared to spend abit more on a machine that will be popular with people looking to hire. I’m sure I’ll question that decision at some point when I hire it to certain people

In my experience, it's not worth the hassle and agro of hiring out anything bigger than a mini digger to the general public.

The paperwork, insurance, maintenance, and damage far out way the reward of £400.00 a week

Oh, and don't get me started on farmers - I only want to pay by the clock hour. Go somewhere else then

If your looking to go down that route you need to be properly pricing up your competition, a new machine and the stark realities before you start.
FYI a 6 ton machine sits at under £400 per week and a 8/9t machine at under £600 per week in general. Then you have the purchase price. In the current climate you will struggle to find a machine newer than 2010 for 30k that's any use IMHO.

Just for food for thought - This is a Recovery we did last year, normally I get 1 or 2 of these a year (although not normally in ponds) Hirer was not insured, and had hired it for a week for under £300. Got very very lucky and it wasn't a write off. But you can easily loose your investment when there out on self drive.

If you buy a small machine they are easier to get back ‘on track’

Or if you want to recover bigger stuff just hire out bigger machines
