Ramp length

I would like peoples views on the length of ramp needed to puta mini digger up onto a tipper. The minimum length is 3.5m but I intend to tip the body a bit so there is no wicked change in gradient at the top. Is it better to go longer, 4 or 4.5m, price difference is marginal.

Depends on the height of the tipper but shortest you are happy to go up is the best, you have to lug them about as well after all.

As long as there less than about 30° it won't bother the machine but the operator might have different views on the matter

3.5 tonne tipper or a wagon? We load kit into Nissan Cabstars and Iveco Dailys with 8 foot ramps, I wouldn’t go shorter for that job personally.
The ramps into the JPM tractor tipper trailer (similar height to a wagon body I’d say) are more like 10 foot long I’d guess, and again wouldn’t want to be any shorter to comfortably load/unload kit. They are heavy though; aluminium and good for 6 tonnes but I wouldn’t rush to get bigger ones (I tend to climb the machines in/out wherever possible to avoid handling the ramps as they are cumbersome buggers!).

I have 4 metre ones for. My 7.5 ton tipper. They are a good job, you have to tip the body up a bit to help. Nightmare when wet and muddy though,

If you're only loading diggers go short but make sure the surface is inherently grippy like the steel ifor ramps.

Track up with the dipper in close enough to feel stable until you get nearish to the breakover and stop , extend dipper till it gently rocks over and track on

I get off my E10 and stand on the blade to track it over the break over point. Just feels far safer. That’s into a 3.5t tipper with ten foot ramps and I wouldn’t want any anything shorter.

Beware of tipping the body as such a large weight can easily twist the frame when not supported.

Or just use a small plant or tipping trailer.

Depending on conditions and angles it's a struggle to get on the tipper trailer let alone another 4-500mm

It’s up into a wagon, approx 1.2m high. I can probably put 4m into the body. I think 4m is 60 odd kgs so wouldn’t want to go much heavier for lugging about.

I agree, I had 8ft ones with my Herbst trailer and they were really rather short and narrow- very little room for error!

Yeah- so that was a 1 meter bed height. I’d reckon 10ft would have been much nicer. Perhaps 12ft for 1.2m bed height...

How do those ramps fair when wet? The ramps that came with my Brian james tipper are punched bit offer very little in terms of grip when wet or muddy tracks

If you look on ramp manufacturers websites the optimum angle for the ramps is the same for all they make. You only buy longer if the loading height is more, then once you've sorted the length select the width and depth for the weight you want up them. Beware if you buy too long and they are not steep enough carrying weight drops a lot and they end up not sitting flat on the floor and can lift off the truck bed when you start to drive up them

To be fair, my tracks are probably overdue replacement but only struggled once on a really icy day.
