Plant hire with operator insurance

Hi folks, I've been struggling today to find out who hire firms get insurance with. We are a tree surgery company with a MEWP and we want to offer a new service hiring out the machine with operator. I'm told we can't do that as part of our current business and that we need to insure ourselves as a completely different business... But I cant find a single insurance company that knows who we can get insurance with for plant hire with operator.... I've even spoken to BIBA the insurance brokers association and they don't have a clue. There are hundreds of companies out there that do hire with operator but not a single insurance company that can insure you to do it from what I've seen. Please can someone point me in the right direction, or if you run a hire company can you tell me who you are insured with.

do it as well as you can,but learn to do it better
used to use NFU for me crane insurance and NU (Aviva), before them - but wouldn't recommend Aviva to anyone after the way they last performed for me

Why can’t you do it as part of your current business? If that’s the case are you sure your insurers are covering you to use your MEWP at all?
Surely sending your trained, competent operator out to operate your MEWP for paid work is covered by your public liability insurance - whether someone has appointed your firm to just supply the MEWP hire or instructed you to undertake wider works can’t have a bearing on whether you are insured or not I wouldn’t imagine.
The only caveats that I can see holding water are if you sent it out to work in a high-risk environment (airport, railway, power station etc) and hadn’t disclosed that type of work to your insurers.
Which insurer out of interest?

I agree with the above. If you are sending your MEWP out with a trained operator/staff member. What’s the difference to sending him out to cut a tree down with it and sending him out to help someone repair their roof for example? 🤷‍♂️

I’d be asking your current insurance company more questions, sounds like you’re not covered correctly. And to start a new business sounds odd to me personally.

From what I am reading it sounds like you might need plant insurance and also an additional policy for public liability insurance. I have had to do this in the past on some of my not so common machinery items
