What are they like to work with? Do the go fairly hard if you go over with a Wacker?
Any advisable minimum thickness for light car traffic?

Depends upon the quality. Sweepings won’t bind for s**t. Temperature also helps

planings make some of the best sub base and wacker lovely if they are a bit soft. On the other hand they can be completely crap.

Don't expect instant results unless straight from planer. Tend to take a while to settle but once down a while make a good surface.

We did my sister's drive which is was quite steep 5"layer rolled in with tv1200 and it has all went together like tar. We did our yard 4" thick but was quite as good stuff and running about with the loadall brings all the stones into the top and is a pain

It would get the occasional car but the most important thing is the old chap needs to be able to get up there with his mobility scooter without getting stuck.

Set fire to them after adding diesel and they go back to road like surface.crushed tarmac is a million times better in my opinion.far more regular in size unlike planings that vary enourmously I n size

I love a nice drop of plannings, and some if it will go down like a motorway. But it does take time. One I did just over a year ago is amazing, you’d not know it was loose plannings it’s that tight, it rolled nicely, despite me moaning because the stuff was a bit lumpy, awful to grade, but it’s gone down brilliantly. key to it has been not much traffic and the weather has done the rest. Don’t underestimate what the weather can do. Some we laid about 4 months ago hasn’t had much rolling, but also gets little traffic this time of year, and that also is tightening up naturally.
try not to use a wacker in it if it’s too hot, it seems like a good idea, but once the Wacker plate warms up and the heat gets into the plate, it will start to stick.

Their not as good as they used to be due to the tarmac used on the roads not being as good as it was years ago due to the environmentalists. Re size and grading is down to the planer and man on it partly, any i can get round me tend to be good but i haven't had any for a while. I gave up buying them years ago but I'll always take them if they need somewhere handy to get rid. Surprising how often i get some free.

They are not cheap anymore if you want to buy them, 300-350 a load round here for crushed stuff. It’s being recycled back into tarmac, so supply has decreased and push the price up. Still good stuff though, and still cheaper than Type1 is here.

Lot of recycling of them round me as well. Only about 4/5 quid a ton less than type1 up here though so not worth the hassle for most jobs.

we had one on hire last year, i cant remember the make - may have been a hamm, but it had a display on the dash that told you when the material was compacted enough. No idea how it knew.
